Copper coil removal and TTC

Good morning Smile

I'm looking for some advice on copper coil removed in order to start TTC.
I'm 30, healthy BMI, no previous pregnancies, scares, or have ever TTC before. Cycle is around 27/28/29 days. I can usually feel what I believe to be ovulation pain around day 16, but have never tested this.
Have had my coil for about 3 years and never had any problems with it.
Would like to conceive this year and wondering about conception times after removal?

How long did it take?
Did you use an ovulation kit?
Were you advised to wait a month before trying?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks x

Hi @noodlesoup99

Sorry I can't help with advice, but I'm pretty much in exactly the same boat as you... though I had my copper coil removed on 10th Jan.
I went to the sexual health clinic to get it in and out (best place to go I reckon), and they didn't mention anything about waiting before trying to conceive. I had a couple of days of spotting afterwards but it was a pretty painless experience.

I've been looking online for info about conception after the copper coil, and it's hard to tell if it affects things to be honest. Some people say the removal messed up their cycle (which it isn't meant to), and some got pregnant straight away...

I've just had my first period since removal. I actually thought / convinced myself I was pregnant first time(pretty impossible considering timings)!... but then I got the period from hell. Worse bloating, worse pain, worse headache than the coil ever gave me! Haha. Oh well Confused

In terms of TTC, most people on here say DTD every couple days before, in and around your ovulation window for the best chance. Some are tracking temperature and ovulation... I'm not quite there yet (I don't want to put too much pressure on things too soon), but I guess it depends how keen you are.

Hope someone can give you (both of us!) some advice! Smile

@joylondon

Hi, TTC twin Smile
I will definitely go to the sexual health clinic to get mine removed - like you, I got mine fitted there, too. Those people are in and out before you know it, eh!
Although, I don't think I'll be getting mine removed until around Easter time, because my DP is just waiting for his divorce to be finalised and we didn't want to add something else to the mix.
Want to go into it with a certain sense of 'freedom', if you know what I mean.
Who knows, maybe you'll be PG by then, and have lots of sound advice for me?!

Anyway - good luck with February baby making and keep me posted!

I had mine taken out April 2017. Fertility returns to normal immediately and i conceived in the August. Sadly thayt ended in miscarriage but i conceived again 8 weeks later.

Doesn't hurt coming out as much as going in. Would recommend end of your period and take paracetemol before you go in. Good luck!

I had mine out in March and got pregnant in May. I didn't TTC straight away but did get pregnant the first month that we tried. I wasn't told to wait to TTC, the doctor warned me to avoid sex just before the removal if I didn't want to get pregnant straight away.

I didn't use an ovulation kit, but I was temping.

I had my coil removed in November 2015. Started ttc around March 2016 when I had just turned 32. First chemical pregnancy July 2016. Second chemical pregnancy March 2017. Pregnant via ivf June 2018.

Everyone's different. 80% of fertile couples will become pregnant within a year (I did), but some people have better luck than others...

Don't expect it to happen straight away, view it as a pleasant surprise if it does. Ttc for more than a couple cycles can be a total head fuck as you get your hopes constantly up and down.

Copper coil with no hormone interference you get back to normal almost immediately. Been looking at it for birth control once this one is born.

physicskate · 25/01/2019 08:58

Oh and I did find that my cycles went from regular 32 days to anywhere from 28-39 days after removal. Probably due to the stress of ttc. First cycle we started ttc was one of the 39 day ones - I'd obviously ovulated late!

Rootvegetables · 25/01/2019 09:02

I had my coil removed and got pregnant first time.... with twins. But seriously I think everyone is different, but as it's mechanical there are no residual hormones to consider I guess.

JamesBondFire · 25/01/2019 09:04

Copper coil removed as wanted to TTC. I wasn't particularly advised to wait but reading on the internet advised to wait a month to see what you cycle was without the coil. Conceived 6 or so weeks after having it out.

Needadoughnut · 25/01/2019 09:06

Mine was removed in July last year. One chemical in October and nothing since.

Roguebludger · 25/01/2019 09:10

I had mine removed and got pregnant that cycle with ds1 had this one removed and have been ttc for 5 cycles and counting... Essentially I don't think it interferes at all with whatever your baseline fertility is. Good luck.

LittleTopic · 25/01/2019 09:12

I had mine removed last year and conceived within the month. We just carried on as normal and baby arrived when she was ready!

We were incredibly lucky (I was fully prepared to be trying for a year!) and everyone is different, but the nurse said you are immediately fertile once it’s removed. If you know your cycle well enough already you shouldn’t need ovulation tests but again it’s what you’re comfortable with.

And FYI having it out is less uncomfortable than putting it in Smile

Twice, I have had coil removed, I had one cycle afterwards and then conceived successfully.
I would definately allow yourself one cycle just you know everything is working well.
