How much does it cost for fertility tests?

I know this isn't a straightforward question with a straightforward answer but I'm asking anyway!

I'm over 35 and have been ttc for #2 for 13 months, including an early mc cycle 2. I meet the criteria of being referred to the 'sub fertility dept' as have been trying for over 6 months and over 35. Had blood tests and swabs, all fine. First requested the referral in August. Long story short gp practice kept mucking up and didn't send the referral off until November. And even then the hospital had to get them to re-send as wasn't correct, so the hospital didn't get it properly until December. It took a lot of chasing but eventually someone at the hospital emailed me on 10th Dec to say I have an appointment mid Feb and that's I'd get a letter through. All great - not a long wait. I just rang the hospital to chase the letter and they have no record of my appointment!!! I don't even know if I'm still on their system. Someone is going to ring me back tomorrow.

But... I want a back up plan! Me and dp are on an average wages so don't have money to burn, but I want to explore going private. I have no idea how you even find a good local private clinic and how expensive are these things?

I know I've only been trying a year and a bit, and that I'm very lucky to have a dc already. I've just had it in my head that the ball would start rolling mid Feb and now I'm really upset - I'm not usually an emotional person.

Sorry for the self pity post

Hi OP I think it varies slightly by clinic/location, but for reference my clinic charged me £150 for an initial fertility consultation which included DHs semen analysis and an antral follicle count and ultrasound for uterine abnormalities for me. AMH blood test was an extra £90 on top of that and HSG test for blocked tubes and additional £300.

Hope this helps and good luck xxx

Thank you crittertamer. That doesn't sound too extortionate! There is hope then.

My dh has had his sperm checked and I've had some hormone blood tests. Not sure which ones exactly. Haven't had a scan done. I might start looking at local clinics.

If you've had some hormone tests on the NHS they were most likely day 3 FSH/LH and day 21 progesterone - the NHS doesn't do AMH testing. These are useful but most private clinics will want to do AMH tests as it gives them a better indicator of the likely success of IVF treatment if you need to go down that route.

Oh super, that makes sense. Thank you!
