Has anyone managed to conceive with these FSH/LH results?

Recent blood tests came back as FSH 3 LH 8.9 on day 1 of period and then FSH 4 LH 12.9 on day 21.

The Dr said these levels are 'satisfactory' but I'm concerned at the high LH.

Has anyone had similar and still managed to conceive?

Have they asked for any other tests (btw, the day 21 results mean nothing whatsoever - fsh and lh are always taken cd 2-5)?? Ultrasound perhaps?

TulipsTwoLips · 19/01/2019 07:45

Hi @physicskate thanks for replying. No, no ultrasound. The Dr doesn’t seem overly bothered. There seems to have been a mix up with which bloods were tested when so I am having to repeat my progesterone one for day 21 as it was only tested at the beginning of my cycle. Perhaps I should push for an ultrasound?

Other tests - thyroid and prolactin. All came back well within the good ranges.

What about testosterone?

Are your cycles regular? Are you overweight? Do you have any symptoms of pcos? How long have you been ttc?

TulipsTwoLips · 19/01/2019 14:09

Ah no, they didn’t test testosterone.

Very regular cycles. Probably carrying a little extra weight round my tummy but not particularly noticeable with clothes on!

No extra hair etc but VERY cold fingers and toes.

I'd be asking for an ultrasound to check for polycystic ovaries. Polycystic ovaries on their own don't mean pcos (an endocrine disorder which can cause irregular ovulation, immature eggs and this make conception difficult for some sufferers).

The reason I'd ask for this is that you need two of three features for the diagnosis: hormone levels (generally taken to be elevated testosterone or an lh:fsh of 2:1 or higher - and yours is close to 3:1), physical symptoms like difficulty losing weight, facial hair, male pattern baldness, irregular cycles etc, and polycystic ovaries.

Your fsh is amazingly fantastic though!!

How old are you??

physicskate · 19/01/2019 14:22

Oh and I've just twigged you said it was taken cd 1!!! It needs to be cd 2-5! What time that day did af start and what time were bloods taken? Was it proper flow/ spotting? Did you spot before af started?

Just trying to see if enough time had elapsed for hormone levels to be ok for testing...

TulipsTwoLips · 23/01/2019 12:06

Thank you for all of this info - it’s really useful.

I’m 41! My Dr was surprised at the FSH too. Yes, unfortunately Dr said day 1 so that’s what I booked. AF came on overnight the night before. No spotting before/in between periods ever.

The Dr is redoing the progesterone one on day 21 but it sounds like I need to be asking more about testosterone levels etc. Will also ask about scanning my ovaries.

No hair loss/ facial hair but some weight gain. On a low GI diet and moderate exercise plan which is already having an effect on my weight luckily.

Thanks again for the advice.

If af came on the overnight and you got the bloods in the afternoon, should probably be accurate enough.. . It would definitely not be accurate if your af started an hour before the bloods (at least, I wouldn't trust it!).

I'd also consider thyroid function tests (can be done any cycle day).

It's a minefield. Good luck!!

Ive just got some results today before i see the gyno clinic for the 1st time my Fsh level was 18.5 the nurse that give me the results said its quite high and thats why im struggling to fall pregnant im gutted xx

Karigan195 · 23/01/2019 16:22

Google standard results at day 21. I did that once and I’m sure LH should be higher then! It’s the LH that causes release of the egg after all and then it goes back down again

Found it

tinyradish · 23/01/2019 21:44

I can't remember my exact results but I had lh:fsh levels about 3:1 also. It did turn out I have pcos & was just really struggling to ovulate (do you think you're ovulating?) but I conceived first cycle of Clomid. Good luck!

physicskate · 23/01/2019 22:30

@sazzle3 - a high fsh doesn't mean it will be impossible to conceive. It might be more difficult/ take considerably longer. What it does mean is that you might not respond well to ivf meds and will be more likely to show a poor response to stims. It may mean you're running out of eggs and your body finds it difficult to ready an egg for ovulation.

@EvelineUK - agreed!! That's what the research suggests!!

TulipsTwoLips · 04/02/2019 08:50

Progesterone level tested today. Hopefully the right day this time! Day 21. Think the results will be low. I’ve developed very cold hands and feet in the last month.

How is everyone else getting on?

Day 21 progesterone results came back as 44. Does that sound fairly good @physicskate? Haven’t had a chance to speak to my Dr yet.

Great! You ovulated!

TulipsTwoLips · 06/02/2019 13:31

Excellent. Thanks!
