Hi all. Dh and I have just decided to begin ttc our second child.

It took us quite a long time to concieve our daughter last time - over a year, then an early miscarry, then again over a year to concieve DD.

Obviously we know that it could take as long and longer again this time round. But I am determined to try and see if I can improve our chances this time round, and that's where this message comes into it.

Are OPKs worth using? How do they work? How good are they?

And any other tips?

Thank you for any help!

Now that would scare DH!!! I think he is counting on some months to get him completely used to the idea - it was a sudden decision (but completely wanted)

Daisyduck,Oxford University are currently undertaking a study/trial on ovulation predictors. If they accept you,you are given an ovulation testing kit free of charge & you have to keep a diary ect,so they can see how effective it is.

I have joined, but don't actually start til next month. If you don't concieve during the trial, they send you all the details that they have collated about your fertile times ect, free,so you have a better chance of getting the timing right.

We decided on this, because it took over 3.5 years to concieve DD.We thought this might speed things up a bit.

They are still accepting couples & if you would like the info, please email/CAT me.

I never ever seemed to ovulate according to OPKs but I clearly did. Got pg in about 3/4 months first time, and after about 10mins second time (at 41). I think you just never know.

DaisyDuck · 04/09/2004 09:55

Thanks all. I will have a look more at them, and about the temperature taking stuff.

Hi Mirage

i am definitely interested in finding out more about the Oxford University programme - my dp has low sperm copunt and i have irregular cycles and using temping methos my ovulation period is always up and down so i never now if i actually ovulated or not. we have been tryign without success since last october.
i might try e-mailing you too. sounds interesting

Valleygirl,

Are you under the care of a gynae at present and do you have any firm diagnosis of the underlying problems?.

Would say that irregular cycles are often caused by hormonal imbalances which can be treated. You should ideally be having regular blood tests and ultrasound scans to assess your ovaries to determine whether or not they are polycystic (i.e the ovaries have multiple cystic follicles, this gynae problem does have effects on ovulation and can stop it from happening regularly).

HTH

Mirage · 08/09/2004 20:25

Hulababy,I've just emailed you-it should be winging it's way through cyberspace as I type.

Hulababy · 08/09/2004 20:50

Got it thanks. Will have a good look tomorrow.

celandine · 08/09/2004 21:48

Hi Mirage, can I jump on the bandwagon too and ask you to mail me details about this Oxford Uni OPK trial? DH and I have year old son, trying for another but my cycles are often 40 days long and irregular (now - they were fine before i gave birth )and now I'm not even sure if I'm ovulating cos my temps don't stay high for long. Very frustrating, especially considering DS was conceived immediately so I had high hopes for another quick conception

valleygirl · 09/09/2004 09:40

Hi Mirage

didn't get the e-mail - can you try again please? [email protected]
have an appointment to see my GP in 2 weeks time so i'll have a proper chat with her then about the medical side of things.
thanks

Mirage · 09/09/2004 16:24

Hi Valleygirl-just re sent it-I think I typed too many 'n's in your name last time.

Hi celandine-yes of course I will send the details to you.You can either let me have your email address or CAT me.I'll send it asap.

valleygirl · 11/09/2004 14:53

got it thanks, am speaking to the nurse on Monday as it seems my dp's vasectomy reversal is a bordeline case for being accepted. so cross fingers! sounds really good though if we get accepted.

NomDePlume · 11/09/2004 15:01

Hula !! Wow, congratulations on your decision ! I'm quite surprised that you and DH are having another, as you seemed quite vehement that one was your limit. Lovely news though, best of luck

valleygirl · 13/09/2004 11:31

can i just advise anyone who's thinking of getting onto the the oxford conception study that you don't tell the nurse in charge that you have been trying for more than 3 months if you have. we have been rejected because we have been having unprotected sex since october. so my advice is LIE!!
