No period for 5 months after coming off pill been diagnosed with thyroid problem

Hi, I came off of the contraceptive pill 5 months ago to ttc, I have had no periods at all since coming off. I have been to the doctors and had blood tests and they have said that they think I have an under active thyroid, they said it has been causing fertility problems and very unlikely that I could get pregnant at the moment. They have told me to wait 3 months before I can have another blood test and if the results come back the same again then they will put me on medication for life. Has anyone else experienced this? I am wondering how long it takes for periods to come back after being on the medication? Also how long roughly it takes to conceive after being on it? We would of been ttc for over 8 months by the time I can even start on it. Thanks x

I haven't been in exactly the same situation but I have been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid after 3 pregnancy losses. Were you told what your TSH was? I would strongly recommend putting a hold on TTC until it is in the healthy range, or better still

unicornxo · 12/01/2019 11:55

@Lyd02 i would get your thyroid sorted before TTC as I have also had 3 losses like @strawberrye and have been tested now for under active thyroid. I haven't got my results yet back yet though.

@strawberrye did you get put on meds?

I always thought TTC was suppose to be an exciting time but when you start having problems such as no periods, no ovulation or miscarriages it just becomes awful. But try and stay positive 🤞

I have an over-active thyroid and Graves' disease, so different issues but similar advice from consultants. We started TTC, and I was then told I couldn't continue for the next six months. I was heartbroken, and scared it would mean the start of a difficult road ahead to have a baby. I think what I found hardest was the complete lack of control over something that felt like it should be my decision.

But, we were allowed to try again in Jan 2016, got pregnant first time and now have a two year old. Obviously, hopefully you'll get the same result, but if not then I just wanted to say that being told you can't TTC doesn't mean you won't have a baby. And going through possible miscarriages and the effects of being on less effective tablets or your thyroid being out of control as mine was is likely to make things worse in the long-run.

I hope these three months go quickly and you get what you want soon.

@unicornxo yep I was started on levothyroxine and waiting until I can have repeat bloods to see if it's the right dose for me, so I'm currently not TTC as hard as that is

unicornxo · 12/01/2019 12:41

@strawberrye it's rubbish isn't it? We saw a consultant this week and he said we need to leave it 12 weeks from now before I can have the blood clotting test. I felt really gutted as he said we must not try in this time. I am getting pregnant first cycle each time, but sadly seem to miscarry.

strawberrye · 12/01/2019 12:52

@unicornxo did he explain why you had to wait for the blood clotting one? I'm just hoping that when all of this is sorted I'll fall pregnant quickly with my take home baby and it'll all be worth the wait

unicornxo · 12/01/2019 14:26

@strawberrye it has to be done 12 weeks after your last miscarriage and that was only recent. I think I am going to have the rest of the tests though and just wait for that one, at least then they might find something in between.

Fingers crossed for you. Have your other pregnancies taken a long time to conceive? It feels so unfair that people get it so easily, yet others it's such a long journey.

Lyd02 · 12/01/2019 14:57

@strawberrye @unicornxo thank you for your replies, so sorry to hear about both of your looses :( I will take your advise and stop ttc until I am on the right medication. @strawberrye no they did not tell me what my levels were , my next blood form just says “raised TSH and positive TPO” which doesn’t really mean anything to me as hadn’t even heard about hypothyroidism until yesterday so just trying to find out what I can online x

@unicornxo first pregnancy took 4 months, second 3 months, third 8 months. My TSH was around 3.5-4 for my first two losses then >60 after my third loss, so I'm hoping that the longer time to conceive for my third pregnancy was because I was hypothyroid for some of that time. How about yourself? Yes it is incredibly unfair, and hard not to feel bitter about it sometimes.

@Lyd02 I hope you get your answers soon x

Pambo81 · 13/01/2019 16:16

@Lyd02 i can relate to this. Came off the pill a year ago. My periods never came back properly and then stopped altogether. After 7 months the doctors diagnosed me with hypothyroidism and im taking levothyroxine.
Think it depends on how bad it is as my doctor has encouraged me to continue TTC the whole time through.
In the end the levothyroxine wasnt enough to kickstart my periods and i had to be prescribed progesterone

Lyd02 · 13/01/2019 16:48

@pambo81 thanks for the reply, you’re the first person that I’ve heard has hypothyrdiosm with absent periods, most people seem to have the opposite so I was stating to wonder if I had something else wrong too. Did the progesterone work? Are you still ttc?

Pambo81 · 13/01/2019 17:40

@Lyd02 ive used progesterone for 2 cycles and each time got a proper period. This is my first month without so fingers crossed everythings back in sync now.
Yep - still been ttc - im 37 and didnt want to waste anymore time especially as my doctor wont rever me to a specialist till ive been trying for a year - if no success this month i should ginally get to see a specialist.
How you feeling anyway? I was soooooo tired and losing so much hair before i began treatment

Lyd02 · 13/01/2019 18:23

@pambo81 that’s a good sign then. Fingers crossed for you this month!! If not then atleast you will finally get to see a specialist , its so horrible just waiting for appointments and not being able to get any help in between. I’m actually feeling ok, quite tired but apart from that I don’t really have any hypothyroidism Symptoms, the only reason they did the blood tests was because I haven’t been getting periods but apart from that I wouldn’t of gone to the doctors as for feeling unwell. Surprised I’ve been diagnosed with it really but hoping the symptoms don’t progress and start to show as time goes on , as must be so much worse ttc when actually feeling unwell x
