Evening ladies, hope everyone is well.

It's my first post here and am delighted to say I had two positive pregnancy tests this morning. I'm a little shocked as hubby and I only just started trying and I have PCOS (preciously been told that I would likely need IVF).

I called my GP this morning and the rather grumpy receptionist told me there are no appointments available unless it's an emergency, and I would need to book an appointment for either 2 weeks' time or 4 weeks' time. As the surgery is closed for Christmas, that basically means I wouldn't get seen until January. My issue is - I really don't know how pregnant I am. Because of the PCOS, my periods are extremely irregular (this year my cycles have ranged from 30 days in length to 65!). I've tried to google the answer but there doesn't appear to be any clear info - can anyone advise? Thanks so much xx

You can get some tests that give you an indication of how far along you are.
I'd be inclined to seek
Advice from the midwife rather than doctors receptionist so I'd ring for a phone appointment - personally I'd try the POAS

First so you can tell her the result

If you have a positive test then you are pregnant. You need to ask the receptionist if you need to see the GP or if you just self refer to the midwife. In most places you just ring the midwife and you have the first appointment with them between 8 to 10 weeks.

No one else will do a test for you the ones from the shop are the same as the doctors have.

Congratulations!

The midwife is the person to speak to about finding out how pregnant you are.

WindyWednesday · 10/12/2018 20:44

You don’t need a DR appt. Ask for a booking appt with the midwife. Congratulations

welshweasel · 10/12/2018 20:44

You don’t need to see a GP, just book in with the midwife. I’d do a clear blue test that tells you the weeks and if it’s 3+ then I’d probably book a private scan for a weeks time, as you’d be at least 6 weeks by then so should be able to date the pregnancy easily enough. If 1-2 or 2-3 then just wait for your booking appointment.

lostvoice · 10/12/2018 20:45

Firstly congratulations!

Our GP surgery didn't want to see me at all and just gave the the number for the midwifery team.

As PP said I would speak to the midwife they will be able to advise.

SheepyFun · 10/12/2018 20:48

When I phoned my local surgery (who were rather more helpful than yours!), they suggested booking straight with a midwife once I was 6 weeks pregnant - I do have regular periods, so could date the pregnancy. At the time I booked midwife appointments through (and at) my doctor's surgery, but that may vary with area.

Don’t need to see the GP, just phone the midwives and they will see you when you believe you are approx 8-10 weeks (booking apt). Bypas GP let someone else have the apt and you can crack on straight to the midwife - bonus!

Ah thank you all so much for your helpful replies, so kind of you to take the time. @flumpybear @Jackshouse @WindyWednesday @lostvoice @SheepyFun

And thanks for the congratulations! Still feels a bit surreal if I'm honest. Trying not to get too excited as I know that a lot can happen in the next few weeks/months.

I will call again tomorrow and see if it's possible to book in with the midwife. Good idea re. those tests that tell you how far along you are. Definitely going to look into a private scan too - it would be amazing if all went well to be able to share the news with close family at Christmas!

Thank you again x
