I’m trying to concieve and have started taking iron supplements, however since I started them two months ago I’ve started spotting just before my ovulation date and haven’t been able to fall pregnant. I’ve just read the vitamin bottle and it says I shouldn’t take them if trying to conceive ! Is there a connection?

Quite possibly, I would speak to a doctor or a pharmacist. Can you not take a prenatal I'm sure they contain iron among other things.

I'm pregnant with my first and wouldn't take anything that had a warning on it telling me not to. I didn't whilst ttc either. Just consult your GP and if you need vitamins or iron they will tell you what you can and can't take. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah, if it's telling not to take them when TTC then don't take them.

MonkeyToucher · 20/09/2018 13:12

Can I ask why you started taking them? Was is recommended by a Dr? Whether ttc or not you really shouldn’t be taking anything without a specific reason given to you by a medical professional surely...?

I think it's because they are multivitamins, so will contain Vitamin A. Vitamin A should be avoided when ttc/pregnancy. Can you get iron supplements on their own?

Josico58 · 20/09/2018 14:00

HelloBrass really? I'm taking a regular multi-vitamin with vitamin A, doesn't say anything about not taking it when TTC or pregnant. And my doctor didn't mention not taking it to me, she just told me start on the folic acid.

Should I ditch the multi-vit for a special (more expensive) TTC one?

Sandstormbrewing · 20/09/2018 23:05

Josico58 ditch the multivitamin completely and just take folic acid. If you are adamant that you want a multivitamin then the perfectil hair skin and nails ones are the same make up as pregnacare but half the price.

Absolutely not unless your Dr tells you to. Prenatal vitamins don't contain iron for a reason. You need iron only if you had proper blood tests done and it showed that your levels are low. Why did you decide to take it?

As pp have said it's because those are not pregnancy-specific vitamins and do contain vitamin A. You shouldn't have large amounts of vitamin A during pregnancy (that's why you should avoid eating liver/liver pate too). Iron supplements are completely fine in pregnancy and most pregnancy vitamins (pregnacare, boots etc) do contain iron. So I'd swap to a pregnancy or pre-conception specific vitamin.
