Hi ladies,

TTC for 2 years with no luck so going through the motions of getting help from the NHS.

Next step is a hysteroscopy - I have my pre-assessment today and have no idea what to expect! Anyone else had this done?

Hi OP. I've had a hysteroscopy and an HSG. I found the hysteroscopy to be fairly uncomfortable during, with truly awful cramps for about an hour afterwards. I had no pain relief there, although gas and air was available if I needed it.

They didn't find anything then, so the whole thing was over with in about two minutes.

Full disclosure- I take tramadol for chronic pain and had taken two prior to the procedure.

The HSG on the other hand was horrific. Crazy painful during and I was having awful cramps for the rest of the day following it. The pain levels were akin to contractions for me, even with tramadol.

I'm saying this not to scare anyone, but just so you can be prepared. In saying that, people's experiences are different, and if you feel you're really going to struggle, you can ask to be sedated, but that brings with it other issues like being unsafe to drive and needing extra recovery time.

Best of luck, OP. Thanks

Really sorry OP- just realised you asked about the pre-assessment. I didn't have one! I was referred by a fertility consultant who just said he recommended it and gave me a booklet to read then I went for my appointment.

I had a hysteroscopy to remove polyps and was under a general anaesthetic - post op pain was really minimal, but the general took me about a week to get over. I would push for sedation, ive heard its very unpleasant to be awake for. Pre op assessment is usually an MRSA swab and some questions, have had bloods done before too.

I had one for other issues, I have 4 DC including 10lbers. I had no anaesthetic - they had to abandon it after 2 mins for which I was truly grateful as the pain was awful!!!

I would strongly recommend asking for a general!!!
