Mid cycle cramping pains - whats this all about?

Am on third month of ttc number 2 and noticed that I get cramps that I'm assuming are ovary pain about a week around ovulation. Its mainly discomfort, but twinges can feel on the verge of painful. Its fairly constant, though the level of discomfort comes and goes. Fairly bad tonight, and I'm expecting to ovulate in next day or so. I don't remember having this before having had DS.

Is this something I should worry about? I have a vague memory of a book saying mid cycle pain might be a hormone problem so now I'm slightly worrying.

Are there any experts out there with answers?

Oh, and its not the same as just having a pain for a few hours or a day, which I used to get, and friends say is ovulation pain, its the lasting for days thats worrying me.

I never noticed OV pains before having dd but since then my OV pains are worse than period cramps, so I think that's what it is.

Thanks for replying! Reassuring that yours are worse than period - mine are different - more painful, but less draining than a period. Do your pains last for days too?
Have just looked on google and saw too much on cysts so am trying not to worry.
Am off to bed, but will check tomorrow to see if there are any more words of wisdom.

ovulation pain is called mittelschmerz. Mine only lasts a matter of hours although can be really painful (yes, more painful than period pains). Am a bit suprised at pains lasting a week, maybe you should mention this to your doc? (a quick google has suggested to me that it is unusual for pain to be this prolonged).

weepootleflump · 06/06/2007 23:09

Mine usually last 2 or 3 days max. Agree with gingernut about seeing doc, hope all is ok.

Mine came on after my first pregnancy and lasted a few days.

Turned out to be endometriosis, which could be important if you want more kids.

So yes, worth seeing GP

Not to worry though, it's very treatable

I would get this checked out by a gynae; mid cycle pain that lasts for days ought to be investigated further.

The possibility of endometriosis causing this needs to be confirmed or ruled out. It is usually only diagnosed through a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy. Ultrasounds and blood tests will not detect it.

kayjayel · 07/06/2007 08:07

Oh bugger. Trying to get to see doctor, let alone get referred to proper gynae is such a hassle.

I thought endometriosis was linked to long heavy and painful periods, which I don't have? But good to know its easily treated if that is it, thanks Eemie.

Will try to get an appointment - doc has system where you can only book 2 wks in advance, so I'm hoping maybe I'll be pregnant before I have to go!

Thanks everyone.

KJ

I would seriously consider changing GPs if they work to a useless system like that.

Er, I hate to say this but endo can be a real PITA (if you pardon the expression) to try and treat.

Painful periods is certainly one of its main symptoms (along with deep pain during sex) but cyclical or continuous pelvic pain is certainly another.
