confused about dates?

I had a positive pregnancy test about 3 weeks ago, I did a clear blue one which said I was 3+ weeks. I had some bleeding and mild cramps - I would have just thought I was on my period but I booked a private scan and she said there was nothing there. I was told that it would take 2 weeks to get a negative result again, I’ve took another test and it still says positive? Can the clear blue dates be wrong that they say you are further along than you are?

Hmm I'm not sure but I'd have thought if you had a positive, then bleeding and there was nothing on the scan that you'd possibly had a miscarriage. But I'm not sure why your still get a positive a few weeks later !

Babycakes97 · 09/08/2018 17:12

I was wondering if the clear blue dates could be wrong that they say you are further along than you thought? so maybe nothing showed up on the scan because I wasn’t far gone enough?... I’m confused Confused

Clear blue aren't very sensitive so I would have thought the opposite! It shouldn't have picked it up if you were too early for testing.

FuckMyUterus · 09/08/2018 17:21

If I were you, I'd ring my local EPU and ask for an urgent scan to rule out an ectopic pregnancy. Did they scan you abdominally or vaginally?

Babycakes97 · 09/08/2018 17:24

I had an abdominal scan and they said it wasn’t ectopic. I’m really unsure if I had a miscarriage because I didn’t pass anything? But then the scan didn’t show anything so I thought maybe I was too early.

The test said 3+ weeks so I wasn’t sure if it could say that and I only be 1-2 weeks if that makes sense?

Ask your gp for a blood test to test your hcg levels. You will know there and then.
It does sound like you have had a chemical pregnancy. I had positive tests with mine and one week later I'm still getting them. It's just taking a while for my hcg to go down.

FuckMyUterus · 09/08/2018 17:51

Did they not even try for a vaginal scan? Abdominal scans can't always pick everything up early

Babycakes97 · 09/08/2018 18:13

What is a chemical pregnancy sorry? Yes they did offer it but I refused because I was really scared 😩

It can take several weeks to get a negative test after a miscarriage.

It’s also common to not find anything abdominal scan wise until 7 plus weeks.... in fact, I’ve had vaginal scans at 9 weeks because they couldn’t clearly see abdominally.

Llanali · 09/08/2018 19:53

I also hate to say it.... but if and when you are pregnant, there will be lots of examinations down there over the course of it.... what had you so scared? Is it something you can begin to address?

Blondemother · 09/08/2018 23:35

The weeks indicator can be wrong - it is based on brackets of HCG levels and gives you a general idea, but will not be accurate for everyone.

Babycakes97 · 10/08/2018 09:57

I was just really scared that it was going to hurt. I was in a bit of state at the time too because of what I was told and I didn’t expect it at all

I experienced something similar with CB digital 5 years ago. It was showing as 2-3 weeks, I then had a period the day after taking 2 tests.
It was a chemical pregnancy. I stupidly tested again 2 weeks later as I was hoping everything was okay and showed as 1-2 weeks, must've been the hormone level still left. That upset me the most at the time, my own fault.

Not much help but just felt compelled to reply.

What is a chemical pregnancy?

HCG can last in your system a while so it may be residual from the pregnancy. However, if you continue to get positive tests in a week or two I'd ask your GP to get you a scan at the EPU. Have it done vaginally - they don't hurt, it's a little uncomfortable and odd but early on in pregnancy it's the only way to see what's going on, an abdominal scan won't see anything early on. Good luck.

hoping2018 · 10/08/2018 20:39

You need a vaginal scan. It's only after 6 weeks form your last menstrual period that they might be able to see anything - sometimes later than that

kaytee87 · 10/08/2018 21:13

@Llanali that's not true.... I was never vaginally examined during the course of my pregnancy, there's no need to. I was examined twice during labour only.

Op I'm sorry but I think you've miscarried.

Beautifulblue · 10/08/2018 21:35

@babycakes97
A chemical pregnancy is a term used to describe a very early miscarriage which occurs before the fifth week of gestation and well before the fetus can be visibly detected on an ultrasound. A chemical pregnancy is believed to affect as many as 75 percent of pregnancies that end in miscarriage.

At 5-6 weeks gestation, a small gestation (pregnancy) sac is seen within the uterus. A transvaginal ultrasound is usually required to see the baby at this stage of the pregnancy.

If you haven't bled at all you definitely need to be checked out, if you have unfortunately miscarriaged your body may need help knowing that. Have you take another digital test? If so was it 1-2 2-3 or 3+ weeks still? If it still says 3+ it's quite possible you have a viable pregnancy & it was just to early to see anything on the scan (especially externally.) if you haven't already buy a digital, if the weeks have gone down you'll know you're HCG levels are decreasing & youre unfortunately probably experiencing a miscarriage if it's still 3+ I would be optimistic but I would speak to my GP either way, they would want you to call. Good luck OP! Flowers
