This is quite a long story, but I will try and be focused!

Background -

My DP and I started trying for a baby about 10 months ago. He has a genetic condition for which he has seen the genetics team and also a urologist because they suspected he had fertility problems. He has been told that he has a low sperm count, but mobility good. He was advised to make some lifestyle changes and repeat the test after 3months. That is due at the end of August.

At the same time, I had a gut instinct that things my side weren't too good either, so I saw the GP a little while ago and she started some fertility investigations - progesterone blood tests etc. All came back okay. She also organised an ultrasound scan which I had a week or so ago.

The results from the scan indicated that I have PCOS as apparently I have more than 12 follicles on each ovary. This has come up in the past, but a scan by a gynae about a year ago said that it was nonsense and that I didnt have it.

Annnnyway, my questions. I know for a fact that I ovulate because I do the tests every month. I am very very regular, at a good weight (BMI 20.8) , active and show none of the other symptoms (hair loss, acne etc.)

Given the above, am I able to concieve?(I know, I know you can't answer that...) but basically does the PCOS "matter" if you are ovulating each month?

I have a doctors appointment on Friday, but would really like to get a better understanding..

I would be willing to go privately to see a specialist if necessary. Any thoughts on this?

TIA

I have PCOS and have been through fertility to have my two DC. Luckily I only needed Metformin. As far as I understand PCOS can affect ovulation so as long as you are ovulating then I don't think it affects anything else and you should be able to get pregnant no problem. Have you had it confirmed via blood test you are ovulating not just test sticks?

Thank you - really appreciate your reply!

I have only used the test sticks, although I know the GP did various bloods including progesterone - what else would they be looking for specifically?

I have PCOS and am overweight but conceived without problem. I know it is linked to fertility issues but it might not be the only reason or the reason at all that you are not conceiving.

I sort of have PCOS but not enough to get diagnosed. I've had 2 scans, one showed PCOS ovaries, one didn't. I can't remember what the Dr said exactly about my bloods, but it was basically they're a bit PCOS but not enough to diagnose. I have irregular periods, but pretty sure I ovulate most cycles, just on random days.

I conceived DD by surprise, and my last pregnancy we were trying for only a few months. I lost that one unfortunately and havent been trying, but not preventing since. It's been about 3 months but I'm reasonably confident it will happen eventually as I know I ovulate at least sometimes. Irregular cycles make testing a nightmare though. I get through a lot of tests.

Just my experience. I hope you get the answers / help you need.

Poop - that’s great to hear!

Girl - thanks for sharing... sorry for your loss. Fingers crossed for you too!

I’m pleased to hear that it’s possible, I had started to panic and think it would never happen. Will be interested to see what the GP says on Friday.

Other stories/thoughts happily received!

I believe the blood test for ovulation is day 21 bloods where they test 3 days after the end of your last period and then again on day 21. If I remember correctly. This then shows definitively if you ovulated, might be worth checking with the GP. A test stick can only show you had a surge of the hormone, not that you definitely released an egg
