One positive test, five negative tests

So pretty much as the title suggests:

I am currently on the pill and my husband and I are planning on TTC the end of this year but recently I have been feeling bloated, cramps, big boobs, back pain etc so yesterday decided to take a pregnancy test. It was a Freedom one from Asda and came up positive (will try and post pic in next post). We then went straight out and bought the clearblue digital tests to confirm and this came up negative. After reading online I saw that it is best to wait a little longer to test again and if possible to wait until morning. I woke up at 3am needing to go to the toilet so thought I would try a test then and this time used an Asda own test and again this was negative. I then tested with my first wee when I woke up this morning using a clear blue digital one again and it was also negative. 4 hours later I thought I would try a Freedom one again to see if that matched the positive result of the first one. I also realised that I used the initial freedom one midstream but all the rest I dipped in a container- probably makes no difference but I don't know? So for this last test I used two freedom tests - one dipped in the container and then i poured the container onto the last one..both came up negative.

I know I should probably accept this negative result but I can't stop thinking about the first positive one. Has anyone had a similar experience to this or any advice at all? Thanks

Ah I don't think I can post a picture yet as I'm a new account but the positive test had a definite second pink line and wasn't particularly faint or anything..

Sorry you’re going through this, must be stressful! I think false positives are very rare, they tend to only react to the pregnancy hormone and most people don’t have that unless pregnant. But the five negatives after is confusing!

Someone else might be along with a better insight/advice but in the meantime I would say, hard as it is, you’re gonna have to wait a couple of days then test again - hcG should rise sufficiently in 48 hours to show, if you are pregnant.

If you still have symptoms and have any pain or bleeding but still get negatives or weak positives, I would check in with your local Early Pregnancy Unit - it might just be worth ruling out anything untoward going on.

Where are you in your cycle, when are you due your period? Might be that the other tests just aren't strong enough to pick it up yet as it's too close to ovulation. A first response test are the best to use for earlier detection x

Gottokondo · 28/07/2018 11:10

Although it's hard wait two days and test again with morning wee. Your wee now is more diluted so it wouldn't work anyway.

moleeye · 29/07/2018 12:25

Clear blue digital aren't sensitive until after you've missed your period. Asda and FRER are the best ones to try if it's before your period is due.

Agree the negative ones are confusing! It's such a stressful time. Hope you test again and get a positive xx

Norma2910 · 29/07/2018 17:11

Thanks everyone.

Couldn't wait and did a First Response one yesterday which was negative so now following advice and will test again in a couple of days and I guess if it's still negative then that's my answer, must have been a false positive. Confusing few days for myself and my husband though!!

So I took a test this morning which was almost 3 days after the first positive test and it was negative. However I have kept all the tests so far and I noticed that one of the tests that I took on Saturday also has a very very faint positive line. I didn't know how faint positive lines could be until I've started reading the posts on here and the first positive reading I had was clear. I don't know if it makes a difference but this test was a Freedom test which is the same as the original positive so I don't kbow if this brand is maybe just know for false positives? So now I'm feeling more confused than ever and going to try and get into the doctors this week to see what they say. In the meantime I will buy a pack of cheap tests online and do one every couple of days. Feeling very up and down and wish I had a definitive answer.

So difficult! Definitely see the doctor, you need to get to the bottom of it all. Good luck!

Realised I can post pictures now so here is a picture of that initial BFP (or at least that's what I thought it was anyway), what do you think? Second picture is the same rest, I just removed the strip from the plastic packaging for a better look.

Will take a picture of the second fainter one tonight (not 100%convinced on that one though) that i found when re-looking at my tests from Saturday after realising from this forum how faint the positive line can be.

Since the first one though there has been six negatives..

Sorry to post again but does that look how a BFP should? I'm so new to this!!

To me that is definitely a clear BFP, not particularly faint and definitely not an evap. I haven’t seen that brand before so I’m assuming you read the packet and two lines means pregnant? (I’m not trying to be patronising, but all tests are different, I used one during my long ttc journey that got me all excited because I had a line and a test line, but when my DH read packet you needed TWO lines plus test line).

It’s possible you had a ‘chemical pregnancy’ (essentially a very early miscarriage which normally occurs very soon after fertilisation, most women just think they are having a late period when this happens, unless they’ve tested early). I think going to the doctor is the best idea. Have you any pain or bleeding?

Norma2910 · 30/07/2018 21:10

Thanks for your reply, its the freedom ones from asda and yes, 2 lines means pregnant (always good to check though!!) and I also had a very faint result like this on a second test too (will try and get a picture) but the rest have been negative. I've had some cramps over the last couple of weeks but no bleeding. Off to the doctors on Friday So hopefully they can shed some light and will keep testing until then too.

How frustrating! It could be that subsequent tests don’t have the sensitivity to pick up the hormone yet. Even if a test says 25 mlu it just means that by the time the hormone has risen to that level, the test will definitely pick it up, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the test won’t pick up anything less than that. Individual tests can vary quite a lot. Also, given that the hormone can take 48 -72 hours to double, you could still be well under the 25 mlu threshold. I’d give it a couple more days and test again, if you’ve not had any bleeding xxxx

Norma2910 · 30/07/2018 22:02

Top one is original positive, second one is one I think is a faint positive (can anyone see that line or am I going mad) and bottom is a negative one I've done this evening.

Not sure that picture shows the second line really but ah well!

Thanks Goldfish, will hold off testing for a couple of days now I think and see what happens then:). Really want a positive result but what will be will be.

How late are you? Do a first respnse x

Norma2910 · 30/07/2018 22:09

I've done two first response and then were both negative. I don't know how late I am unfortunately- I'm still on the pill as we weren't planning to TTC until the end of the year.
