Should I be worried?

We have been TTC for 6 months/cycles (feels longer as we started trying in December but skipped 2 months for personal reasons). My periods are relatively regular although they vary from 26 days to 31 days, and although I've only used OPKs for 3 months I get a positive around day 14-17 depending on the length of the cycle. So all seems in order as far as I know.

But no sniff of a BFP so far. Would you be worried? Should I start to look into possible solutions treatment? If not, at what point would you start to get concerned?

Some extra info that may be relevant:

We're both 28, I'm almost 29. I am about a stone and a half over a healthy weight BMI-wise and DH is very overweight. I have bad hormonal acne that goes away when on the right contraceptive pill, which could possibly indicate a hormone imbalance, and IBS that leads to quite bad bloating, but no other symptoms that obviously indicate an issue (e.g. no excess body hair). I don't get CM in my knickers, only small amount on loo roll. I have a very stressful job. In an ideal world we'd like 2-3 children so although I'm personally not desperate for a baby RIGHT NOW (if it takes another year it's fine, as long as it happens), I do feel my biological clock ticking.

Thanks for reading!

No you shouldn't be worried. Try for at least a year before even thinking of worrying...and even then you probably still don't need to worry.

Hi @BooksandBrie. I'm very similar to you, although am 34 but we've been trying a similar amount of time and no bfp yet. I'm trying not to worry and trying not to get obsessed about ttc so am not charting or tracking anything (I was and stresses myself out). I've already mentally pencilled in to see the GP if no luck by December as it will have been a year then.

Flowers hope we both get our bfps soon

You sound like you have some features of PCOS? I expect if you went to the GP they would agree to tests for this. If you did have PCOS - most clinic recommend referral to fertility clinic after 6 months of trying if there is a confirmed problem.

However the most obvious thing you could do to make a difference is get yourself to a normal BMI. You don't say what your partners BMI is but it's worth noting if you do end up needing fertility treatment most places won't treat if BMI over 30.

Lots and lots of stories of people conceiving when they lose some weight.

Best of luck!

Hi @VenusStarr, I think my only PCOS symptom is acne and potentially being a bit overweight (and gaining about a stone when I'm not on the pill and losing a stone when I am). Is that enough to warrant tests for PCOS? I don't have any excess body hair or irregular cycles (they vary by up to 5 days but normally 26-28 days.

Sorry, that reply should have been to @Hoping2018.

@VenusStarr I've similarly planned to get a GP appointment in December, but also worry about wasting time if there is an issue!

It took 13 months to conceive DD1 (absolutely no known fertility issues, not overweight etc). 2 and 3 were conceived first month of trying. Sometimes it just takes a while.
If still no luck after 12 months I’d think about making an appointment.

Redrosebelle · 12/07/2018 20:22

No, you shouldn’t be worried! It can take up to a year - it took 11 months to conceive first time and 7-8 months this time. Try for another six months and see what happens. Good luck!

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 20:41

It’s easy to say you shouldn’t be worried at only 6 months TTC but I felt that way too and I’ve been trying for 3 years. It’s rough OP 💐 you do sound like you have some hormonal issues, perhaps ask your doctor if you can have some checks for PCOS? Xxxx

SoyDora · 12/07/2018 21:08

NoNotheresnolyrics of course it doesn’t mean that there definitely isn’t an issue, but it is perfectly normal to take over 6 months to conceive. As I said above, my first took 13 months for absolutely no reason... that was just how long it took. There is a reason that people are told to wait until they’ve been trying for 12 months before seeing a Dr.

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 21:21

SoyDora Yes I completely agree with you! I just meant that I have sympathy for how she feels xxx

hoping2018 · 12/07/2018 21:34

You are def in normal range for time it takes to conceive. However my periods were very light but regular so I didn't go in until one year TTC - wish I'd gone sooner as my fsh was high and the doctor looked surprised I didn't come sooner. Took us two years and two cycles of ivf but finally here now - so I have a slightly skewed perspective however you've got nothing to lose from going to speak to the doctor
