PCOS/thyroid

Currently TTC.

Just been to get my PCOS results to determine if I have it or not, to find out they did the wrong tests (annoying), but through that they've found out I have an under active thyroid and have told me to stop TTC until I've seen a specialist due to the risks to the baby.

So I'm feeling pretty rubbish as you can imagine, have to go back for more tests for the PCOS diagnosis next week. Anyone got any advice or general wisdom on either of these subjects?

I know I'm still in a position where it's still possible and I do feel lucky but it is a little bit of a knock, I'll treat myself to some chocolate and pick myself up again.

Hope you're all ok x x

What was your tsh? T4? It's easily sorted once you find the right dose of meds...

6 point something xx

That's too high for ttc. They will probably put you on levothyroxine and then retest after 6-8 weeks and then adjust meds as required. You should notice an increase in energy and it might be a bit easier to lose wait when you're on the right dosage.

To confirm pcos they need to tick two of three boxes:

Symptoms

Polycystic ovaries

Hormone levels (generally elevated testosterone and an lh to fsh ratio of at least 2:1).

@physicskate wow you're in the know! Thanks ever so much for your help, I feel a little bit better now. Fingers crossed the PCOS turns out to be nothing and I can get on with things once I've got the right meds xx

I have PCOS and was diagnosed with slight hypothyroidism (my result was 6.8).

Usually I believe that your result needs to be over 10 to be diagnosed with hypothyroidism and prescribed medication, but anything over 2.5 can interfere with fertility so if your result if over 2.5 and you've been trying TTC for over a year they will put you on a low dose of Levothyroxine.

It might have been a coincidence, but I was only on the Levothyroxine for about 3 weeks when I conceived (- after nearly 2 years of TTC -), and regardless of the PCOS.

My midwife directed me to be consultant-led for my pregnancy and they explained that thyroid function can decrease as the pregnancy progresses, so I have a blood test every 4 weeks and my dosage has been increased twice during my pregnancy, to keep my levels in the right range.

I had no idea that my thyroid wasn't functioning properly until I had this test, but (for me at least) it has seemed as though the treatment has been quite routine and easy to keep on top of.

Hope that puts your mind at ease!

@JetsetJetlaggedJaded first of all congratulations! 😊

Yeah I had no idea either, I had a blood test in may and got 3 point something so it's only crept up in 2 months so it's good actually that they got the tests wrong otherwise it's unlikely I'd have found out for a while!

We've been told to stop TTC for now and only have been for 4 months so I'm not sure what they will say to us in terms of waiting for treatment/continuing to try but hopefully I'll get my appointment through soon and can ask all these questions.

I've read that this could cause me not to be ovulating as well (although I am still having regular periods).

How is your pregnancy going so far? It's good how proactive they are with it all xx

Just to reassure you, once my thyroid meds were stable I conceived really easily, so once your T4 is in the right zone (keep telling them you are TTC) it shouldn't cause any additional issues.

lilypotter88 · 06/07/2018 21:01

@Wellthisunexpected how long did you have to wait for them to intervene? Xx

As soon as it was diagnosed I was put on levothyroxin.

lilypotter88 · 06/07/2018 21:15

@Wellthisunexpected because you were TTC? That's really reassuring, thank you so much x

No, they just treated it. I wasn't actually TTC when I was diagnosed! When I was TTC I got my levels checked and they adjusted my dose as required and I was pregnant the next month!
