what does 'normal' result mean for hcg in a pregnancy blood test?

Hi everyone,

Probably a really stupid question:

I've had a blood test for pregnancy following a contraception issue. I called to get my results today and was told to make an appointment with GP which I did however it's not for a few days.

The receptionist let slip that the test was 'normal'. I would assume this means 'not pregnant' but I'm not 100% sure and can't find anything clear online.

Does anyone know?

Thanks.

I don't have a clue sorry, but how very confusing for you!

Any reason you can’t just do a pregnancy test?

QuackPorridgeBacon · 11/06/2018 22:51

I guess it can mean normal for a non pregnant woman or normal for a pregnant one. I’d probably guess the former but can’t be sure.

I'm sure HCG is only present in pregnant women so I'd say a "normal" level would mean pregnant to me.

Thanks all, really appreciate your responses.

Riddley- It's only about 2.5 weeks after the contraception fail which I understood from the GP would be very early for most urine tests to show an accurate result hence being sent for a blood test which can pick up hcg much earlier. not sure if first response or anything would work at this stage?

Assuming your contraception fail was around the time of ovulation, then a HPT should show a positive result by now if pregnant, because you would be around 2 weeks since conception (or more). Definitely a FRER would show.

Ah right- thanks Wanda. I will get one after work today then. Must admit I don't know much about pregnancy or testing. It's quite difficult to say when ovulation was as I'd just come off the Depo injection and not had a period in months but sounds like it'd be worth trying a first response test.

As a frequent recent tester, I can confirm that FRER are the most accurate for an early result. Get the "early response" kind as these are sensitive to 6.5mlu. Most other tests are sensitive to 20 or 50mlu. If you get a positive, then you could get a Clearblue weeks indicator to tell you how many weeks since conception. It will say 1-2, 2-3, or 3+.

Good luck!

Wellthisunexpected · 12/06/2018 15:41

A normal hcg result would be 1-5 units. A frer picks up at 6 units, a clear blue at between 25 and 50.

Yes get a first response, you should be fair enough along to get a positive if you are pregnant.

Bumdishcloths · 12/06/2018 19:43

Normal could mean either way to be honest, but would suggest trying a first response test while you're waiting to see GP

northernbella · 13/06/2018 00:47

Thanks again for replies everyone. Did a first response test and it was negative.

Slightly mixed feelings as I'd thought hard about if I was pregnant but it's the best outcome in all honesty. It's a casual thing and I wouldn't choose to start a family with the guy involved (he's nice just not really right for me long term).

Best of luck to those TTC
