Spina Bifida in family

Hi all.

My partner and I have recently stopped using contraceptives after deciding to start a family. I started taking folic acid (Monday) only to realise that I may need to take more folic acid than the 400mcg over the counter dose. My sister has Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus and I might be at an increased risk. I can’t get in to see my new doctor for another week or so at least and I’m panicking because we’ve DTD twice and I’ve been ovulating this week. In a panic I started taking 12 of the over the counter medication (folic acid) just in case. Any advice or people in a similar situation greatly appreciated. I am worried I’ve already caused damage or not been prepared enough.

Thank you so much in advance!

The recommended dose for such circumstances is 5mg so 12 of the over normal dose ones is right. Boots sell 5mg over the counter. It isn't harmful to take more because it is removed via the kidneys in to the urine, so you don't build it up anywhere.

If I were you, I'd keep taking 12 until you see a doctor. If you aren't yet pregnant then don't worry, and even if you are, the chances are only marginally higher than normal anyway.

Hello,

My 2nd baby unfortunately. Had a rare condition similar to SB and I had to have an induced miscarriage - as her skull had not formed and she wouldn't survive once she was born.

So the consultant told me I needed to go on increased folic acid.
When I asked the doctor he disputed it and said I didn't need it.

But the consultant called him and insisted he prescribe it.

So .. make sure the doctor does give it you! He may say you don't but get a 2nd option.

But don't worry about any of it. It is very rare and they only advice increased folic acid as a precaution xx

Hi, I have spina bífida and I've had 2 very health pregnancies. I found out I was pregnant really early on both times, dayvif due period and started taking extra folic acid at 5weeks on my first pregnancy and straight away in my second.
Only issues I had was the delivery I had to have a GA c section as they wouldn't consider giving me anything in my spine x
