Scarred kidney and trying for a baby

Hey everyone, I'm new on here and this is my first thread 😊

My hubby and I want to try for a baby at the end of the year after our Disneyland Paris trip! But I have a left scarred kidney from an infection I had as a teenager. So I'm sorry if I sound stupid but does anyone know if this is going to be difficult for me to conceive or during pregnancy? Anyone else had the same problem?

Is your kidney function normal?
I would have thought wouldn’t affect conceiving etc or pregnancy although they might keep a close eye on you as pregnant women tend to get urine infections.
If worried go to your gp to discuss.

It won’t affect conception but may make diseases such as preclamsia more likely. Have a chat with your GP.

Duchy - why is that?

applesandpears56 · 20/05/2018 20:26

Just curious for the future as my dd has a bad kidney

My sister only has one kidney and was fine. She was referred to a consultant who discharged her immediately. Obviously everyone is different though, but as long as the midwifes know (purpose of initial "booking" appointment is to pass on all this info to midwife) then they should monitor you accordingly.

HopeAndJoy16 · 20/05/2018 20:33

Apples because the kidneys help regulate blood pressure. Op I don't think the scarred kidney will have any effect on your ability to conceive but if/when you get pregnant I would be extra vigilant about treating signs of UTI's. At booking your midwife will take a full medical history and can advise on whether other medical input will be required

My kidney function has been normal ever since and I keep track of my blood pressure just in case. As was always told if it went too high I needed to see a gp.

I think once we start I will make a gp appointment just to talk about it all. Thanks everyone for your replies :)

Oh so just that high bp might kick in with the body under increased stress?
Yes op def check your bp at home regularly in your pregnancy then

Hi OP, I have scarred kidneys from childhood infections - one worse than the other. It didn't affect conception for me and I have a healthy 1 yr old. I have high BP because of the kidney issues so was very closely monitored during pregnancy for pre-eclampsia but was fine.

I was also monitored in case my placenta didn't provide enough nutrients (again I think due to high BP) and my bad kidney became quite swollen (which apparently often happens in pregnant women generally). I know this sounds like I had a difficult pregnancy but I actually didn't - just had more regular scans and lots of BP checks. I was induced at 39 weeks. Good luck!

sodababy2 · 20/05/2018 21:01

Meant to say I was on medication for high BP when I was pregnant which was safe for baby. Bizarrely since I've had my DC my BP has been the best it's been and I'm off medication for the first time in 10 years Grin

I had a kidney op 10 years or so before conceiving my dd, but not scaring related. I also have/had slightly high blood pressure before conceiving - don't know if it's kidney related or not. It didn't affect conception but I did get lots of UTI's (on lots of antibiotics and trips to out of hours gp's!), hydroenphrosis (kidneys swelled) and did get pre-eclampsia towards the end but it was controlled by extra meds. Since having my dd I have had my other kidney operated on in the hope that if I have another pregnancy that my kidneys will cope a bit better. Your midwife will decide if you need to be consultant led because of your history. I was, just meant extra appointments and scans. I know nothing about kidney scaring but if your kidneys function ok then the outlook sounds good to me. You might be slightly higher risk of uti's I guess.
