Have I left it too late??

I'm 35 years old and about to embark on TTC my first baby journey. I met my lovely husband a bit later than anticipated so we are only just TTC now. I have noticed that during my last few cycles, AF is taking longer to arrive & so I'm worried that this means I'm running out of time to conceive naturally. My hubby thinks I'm being melodramatic lol

Are there any "older" mummies out there that didn't even start trying until their late 30s?? Should I be taking any supplements or what not to help?? Also how can I tell when I'm ovulating if the length of my cycles keep changing?? Advice please!

TIA xx

Hi Pixiee, I'm 34 and due my first baby in 2 weeks. It took 3 months to conceive, and during the last month of trying before my BFP, my husband and I took the Pregnacare His and Hers Conception supplements. I do believe this helped. Also, I believe I ovulate a bit earlier each month than my period tracker was telling me - so go as soon as you notice a change to your CM, go for it! Don't rely too much on dates from a tracker. Good luck! Really hope it happens soon Smile

Hey, I'm 35 and trying for no. 2. My cycles have changed as I've got older but that's normal apparently so I wouldn't read too much into it. A good friend of mine didn't start trying til she was 36 and now has 2 having conceived both quickly so it can happen.

Hey OP. You're young! I'm 36 and I'm 8 weeks now. I did have an early loss back in February but we were very lucky to unexpectedly conceive again soon after. Didn't do anything special other than take folic acid when ttc and also kept a meticulous eye on, erm, CM. When it becomes clear and stretchy mid cycle ish, get doing it! All the best with your ttc journey, it's a real roller coaster of joy and sadness all rolled into one at times x

I am 38 and had my baby just over 5 weeks ago. I met my partner later than anticipated also. It took us 7 cycles to conceive and at first used apps to track my cycle. However, when we used the ovulation sticks it worked straight away. I had a relatively easy pregnancy and took pregnacare all the way through.

Good luck!

I would defo recommend going to the doctors about the long cycles, anything over 35 days are classed as irregular and more likely you are not ovulating. That's what happened to me and after a year and a half, I learned I had PCOS, I was referred to a fertility clinic and got pregnant after 5 months

Claire90ftm · 11/05/2018 18:44

Try the SMEP (Sperm Meets Egg Plan). It covers all of your fertile days and I credit it for getting me pregnant first time.

I've just had a longed for dc4. I was convinced I was perimenopausal before ttc as my periods were shorter, lighter and started and ended with spotting. Totally different from my previous heavy, long periods.

I conceived first time - I'm 39. Hope that is reassuring.

TanginaBarrons · 11/05/2018 18:51

Also, from my research, usually peri starts with shorter intervals between periods. I found this reassuring as mine were really spacing out.

I had my first baby at 43 - I wasn't even trying Blush.

36 when I had mine and I was actively trying not to have one!

Pixiee · 11/05/2018 21:25

Thank you all, gives me some hope! Xx

can anyone recommend an ovulation kit? X

I had my first at 35 and second at 37, no problems at all.

The only thing I will say based on personal experience, is youve definitely not left it too late for your first child but you’re cutting it fine for subsequent children. So if you want more than one then get going as soon as you can after your first is born.

GladysKnight · 11/05/2018 22:18

both DC & DC2 were born after I was 40!!! Grin

DC1 & DC2, obvs

Shmithecat · 11/05/2018 22:19

Started TTC at 38 (dh was 44), pregnant after 1 year at 39, had ds at 40. It's not too late!

Chattycat78 · 11/05/2018 23:11

The only way to get any answer on this would be to get the fsh test at the doctors. it would tell you if you have low ovarian reserve or not (and thus less time left to conceive): it wouldn’t tell you how much time you have though, so possibly limited use.

I’m sure you’re fine, but one thing I have learned is that you can’t use anyone else’s stories to be reassured or otherwise. Everyone’s fertility is very unique to them.
