TTC - am i hindering my chances?

Since I've been with my partner i always always get UTI after sex, after various investigations and no real "cause" found i am on a permanent dose of antibiotic every night, I have to use lots of lube (yes brand, organic water based) and i have to make sure there's enough fluid in my system so i can wee immediately after sex.

My OH thinks that me weeing straight after sex is hindering our chances of conceiving as he says im just flushing everything away!

Is he right? It's not so bad if we DTD at night but if we do it in the morning, or afternoon i have to make sure i stick to the strict weeing after sex otherwise it can be 10 hours or so before i take the antibiotic which isn't always enough time to stop the infection in its tracks.

Thoughts?

Well some people lie on their back with legs elevated for some time after sex. However I don’t think that is actually proven to improve your chances, so I don’t think getting up to go to the toilet would decrease your chances. However I do think the longer the sperm can stay in your body the better and it might come out quicker if you go to the toilet straight away. Can you wait 10 mins maybe? I would research this yourself though and see what you find. Obviously weeing itself comes out of a different place also but I presume your partner knows this? 😂 it’s funny how some men have no idea! And just to check is that lube sperm friendly? You could try preseed as that’s supposed to create a good environment for sperm.

Basically, the good sperm will already be far enough up not for it to be an issue. All that gets 'washed away' is the seminal fluid and the crappy sperm who wouldn't be able to fertilise a egg anyway.

The lube can hinder conception.

My sister suffered, not as badly as you but enough to keep antibiotics at home to start taking as soon as she felt one coming on, it got so much better after she had a baby.

oh thats good to know! yeah he just thinks that as a lot "falls out" when i go to the loo that it hasnt had a chance to get settled before i effectively push it all out lol!

i did just google the lubricant and it seems they do a baby friendly version so will definitely switch to that!

Hi this isn't everyone's cup of tea but we used to use an indeed cup after sex (literally straight away popping it in - soooooo romanticWink) as we were also worried about losing swimmers afterwards. It could solve any concerns you have and allow you the freedom to pee as soon as you need to! Glad you are already checking the lubricant as they can be a factor - best of luck with you ttc!

There is absolutely no evidence that going to the toilet straight after sex will hinder your chances of conception. Some of your OH sperm will be well on their way even before he ejaculates due to pre-cum. What does as others have pointed out is the type of lube you are using. There are specific lubes that are tested not to interfere with or actually help with with conception.

Bubblegum89 · 08/05/2018 13:51

No you’re not. Peeing after sex is highly recommended to lower the risk of UTI’s. I have recurrent cystisis and have done since I was 17 and have always gone to the toilet straight after sex. The point of ejaculation is that it projects sperm to exactly where they need to be within a matter of seconds. What comes out afterwards is mostly semen. All the good strong sperm are already on their way to your tubes regardless of whether you stand up, pee, lie down, put your legs in the air... As others said, it could be the lube not being sperm-friendly or even the antibiotics you’re taking but it’s not the peeing after sex that will be hindering anything

brilliant, thanks all I will no longer feel guilty about flushing anything away!! :-D

...is he under the impression that you pee out of your vagina?

The sperm are already up in your vagina. You can pee freely without disturbing them.
