TTC- high BBT but no LH surge

Hello- this is my very first post so pls do bear with me. My husband and I have been trying to TTC for 5 months now with no luck. I have been using an app to track my BBT and OPKs. This month the BBT has detected a rise in my temp but it's not corresponding with the OPK (I'm using the clear blue OPK- it hasn't shown a flashing smiley face (rise in oestrogen) or constant smiley face (LH surge)). This has happened before on a previous cycle. Does anyone know why this could be? Any help would be much appreciated. I know in the grand scheme of things we haven't been trying relatively long, but each month that passes by with no pregnancy is utterly heartbreaking (and it seems as though everyone around me is able to get pregnant instantly). Thank you.

Hi there!

So do your BBT charts show clearly when ovulation happened? What app are you using too btw? I really recommend Fertility Friend.

With OPKs I know plenty of MNers on here that never get a positive reading on an OPK yet do ovulate (either test with DRs confirm this or their BBT charts do). OPKs really aren't a reliable way to test for ovulation but BBT charting is more reliable if you can guarantee you are testing at same time daily with 3 hours sleep minimum.

also so much empathy with how it feels everyone else appears to be getting pregnant instantly!

Similar thing happened to me last month. If you looked at my chart without paying attention to OPKs I look like I O'd on CD19, but I didn't get a positive opk until CD21. FF refused at any point to assign O day to before CD21!

I searched and searched online for any answers but came up with nothing! Weird.

First appt at the fertility clinic after TTC for 2 years:
Me: ‘I’ve been using OPK for several months but stopped because I didn’t get a positive every month’
Consultant: ‘oh, OPK notoriously unreliable’ ... and just moved on ...

Blood tested confirmed I was ovulating and you could have knocked me over with a feather when it came back as a male issue.

I never have done BBT due to not finding a thermometer with a good review, and then we ended up going IVF anyway.

But yeah, really shocked about how abrupt Dr was in discounting OPK.

Good luck! X

Hi all- oh thank you so much for your messages, really appreciate it. Honestly, my husband is super supportive but nonetheless I have often felt alone on this journey (which should be wonderful but each month is truly heart wrenching). I'm using the Natural Cycles app (and have been using the clear blue OPK). I have also had blood tests done (which luckily came back okay on the whole) so it indicates that I am ovulating. I'm now on supplements also. Feel like I'm doing everything we can possibly do. I'm constantly told not to stress and to try and relax- but it's so hard when having a baby is all you want :-( Thanks so much for the advice and support- it's so very helpful x

TTC7 remember that making a baby isn't all down to you! New research is showing that actually much of the time it is the male that is causing infertility in the couple. So don't stress thinking it is you. Flowers

Thanks TwittleBee- DH is getting tests done next week. Hoping they come back fine also so then I think it might be a matter of just being patient... I think next cycle I'll scrap the OPKs and just measure my BBT. X

Also, I know 5 months feels like ages but just remember that for most couples it takes 6 months but 85% conceive within a year so you still have a while to go before you have to really worry about being infertile. Most Drs won't start investigating before a year unless they think fertility might be linked to other health issues so its great you have it all being investigated so early! x

Thanks TwittleBee- I know, so I do try and have perspective, it's just tough. I suffer from anxiety generally (TTC is definitely making it worse!) so I think that's why the doctors were a little more willing to run some tests, but even that was at a push. Thanks for all the support x

The only perspective you can have is yours so don't feel bad your worrying even though you've been trying for less time than others. Its okay to find it tough xx

Thanks TwittleBee, really appreciate it. Hope all is going well with your journey also xx
