Lamotrigine and TTC

So me and BF have been planning to start TTC for about 6 months.
I have grand mal epilepsy which has been controlled by lamotrigine for 8 years with no seizures etc.
I have been open with my parents that we are thinking about TTC but we have not said it was this soon (they think it will be in the next year or so, we are thinking this year to start) and they constantly tell me how things will happen differently because of my epilepsy.
So, DM keeps telling me "you'll need to go and see your consultant before you start trying and then they'll put you on different medication and folic acid" and so on and so on.
Today DF rings me and says a girl who he works with sister has just had a baby and she's on lamotrigine too and before they even started TTC they saw the consultant, lowered her lamotrigine and put her on another medication AND she had to "voluntarily surrender" her driving licence for 6 months.
My DF knows I rely on my driving for my job and it would be basically impossible for that to happen. I don't know if it was a dig or something but its really bothering me now.
Please can someone just give me a bit of advice or peace of mind? In my eyes my consultant will know exactly what to do and I won't listen to other people who aren't qualified to tell me otherwise.
Parents also don't know I have spoken with GP (known me since I was born, really involved in all of my treatment) and GP has said I have to go on 5mg folic acid and if we get a BFP get in touch and they will refer me back to the consultant (I was discharged by consultant as I was seizure free for 4 years and he advised I be re-referred if I ever need anything)

Have you had another Lamotrigine thread recently? I commented on one with my personal experience (under a different username I think). If it wasn’t you then have a search. Anyway I was similar - seizure free for several years. I take 100mg Lamotrigine per day. I did not have to lower my dose/change medication and I did not have to give up my driving licence. The folic acid high dose is v important but you know about that already. I’ve had one healthy baby and am currently pregnant with number two, no issues or complications so far.

Ah it was your previous thread I remember (I was Origamoo on there so won’t repeat all my experience again!)

@Agent13 haha yes that was me I am just so nervous I thought I would ask again.
I am glad you've given me an insight, my parents seem to generalise epilepsy because its not very common round here.
They assume that because someone else has epilepsy, we will be treated the same but I'm going to ring. GP tomorrow and ask to go and have a chat with them about it as its stressing me out now.
I was tempted to just say to them yes we are trying but then that just opens up to a million more questions and "you know you need to..." and "well .... did this and that's what you'll have to do" etc and on and on and on 😂
Tell me @Agent13 did you get much of this before you TTC?

Well, no, but my parents aren’t that involved in my business Grin

Basically you’re right about generalising. What applied to someone else they know with epilepsy might not apply to you. My experience might not be the same as yours. Best bet is to speak to neurologist really - GPs don’t always know too much about epilepsy/medication in my experience anyway.

I think I will speak to my GP tomorrow and ask to be re-referred to my neurologist. 😊 thanks for the help
