Hi all just a quick question me and my DP have been trying for a baby for a couple of months without success I was using apps that told me when I was ovulating and it's not worked so now I plan on using a basal body thermoniter has any one used one and managed to get pregnant.

Yes both pregnancies. Got pregnant cycle 5 and cycle 4 respectively.

kaytees · 21/04/2018 16:02

I've been using one since August and had a chemical preg in December and am now 4+3, so I would say they work. Not only do they help pinpoint ovulation, I actually suspected I was preg because my temp was steadily rising after a sharp implantation dip so it's useful for that too!

AnneLovesGilbert · 21/04/2018 16:05

They’re brilliant. The bible on temping is w book called taking charge of your fertility. Get a copy secondhand on amazon or eBay and it’ll tell you everything you need to know.

I got a bbt thermometer off amazon as well, get one with two decimal places and a memory function. I wake up, do it straight away before getting out of bed and then forget about it and stick the number in the fertility friend app.

Can’t recommend it highly enough. Good luck.

Thank you mustbeduesomefeet kaytees and AnneLovesGilbert for your postive stories that's really given me a boost which I needed because I have tired so many different things using apps, I've changed my diet, I'm taking vitamins, getting more excerisise and trying to lose weight and literally nothing is working. Feeling like a bit of fauiler right now I knew it wouldn't happen straight away but I never imagined it would be this difficult either.

Certainly a must read is the book a pp referenced. Taking charge of your fertility is a brilliant read if you're trying or otherwise!

Temping will also allow you to work out if there are any issues preventing conception and then you can think about interventions.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 21/04/2018 16:24

MustBedueSomeBetterFeet I will read that book. Yeah that's what my mum said it helped my aunty to find out that she wasn't ovulating because of endo so she was able to try fertility treatment and had a baby.

It turned out I was ovulating 3 or 4 days later than I thought I was and even though we dtd quite a lot it's easy to go at it hammer and tongs at the first sign of ewcm then run out of steam a bit and miss the actual window!

Don't stress too much about dtd on ov day, on the FF app you can look through loads of other people's charts and a lot of BFPs come a day or two, occasionally 3, before ov day. You get confirmation you've ovulated 3 days after, so keep going every day or every other day till that happens.

I've got quite nerdy about it and DH likes a visual snapshot of what's going on, who doesn't love a colourful graph! The free version is fine but if you want to keep track of a lot of symptoms, you might like the paid for version, it's so much better than Ovia, which I used for a while and is all guess work on the app's part with some stuff about cm and cervix position, where temping gives takes in actual data.

I've recently miscarried so getting back on it in the next week or so hopefully and while temping doesn't tell you when you're going to ovulate (I really can't be arsed with opk though a lot of people love them) it's like a tiny pat on the back to have it confirmed after the fact. Looking back, I can see that my BFP chart was very different to the ones before, like kaytees says. Even more useful than that though is seeing it not having happened in a month, or that my cycle was shorter or longer based on my ov date, so I didn't get my hopes up about being "late".

As the book explains so well, you don't get a late AF (unless you're pregnant when it won't show up at all), you get earlier or later ovulation, and the time between that and AF (luteal phase) stays the same within a day or so.

I saved a small fortune in tests and the hassle and stress of early testing as I got to learn my cycle and had an idea of what to expect.

AnneLovesGilbert thank you so much for that information it's really helpful to get tips and advice from people who have been through all this and know what they are doing. I'm so sorry about your MC good luck for this month I have my fingers crossed for you. I will get that book am at the point where I will try absoultely anything I will give that app a go too. I didn't like the ones that I used because they never seemed to get my ovulation right I don't think because it never seemed to work the only thing it got right was my periods.

Thanks @Shootfirstaskquestionslater my good wishes to you too Flowers

Get yourself the FF app and a copy of the book. It's in sections, so temping for conception and contraception, I wolfed the ttc relevant stuff down in an evening and found it super easy to read. Honestly, I'm such a convert, really makes complete sense. She's quite funny and gives a lot of interesting examples. I was already in tune with my cycles but like I say, I didn't realise my ewcm was actually happening a couple of days before I ovulated.

Ask away if there's anything you want to know. Happy to chat Smile

thenorthernluce · 21/04/2018 17:53

I tracked using a thermometer and conceived first time, so definitely give it a go.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 21/04/2018 17:58

Hi ladies I just wanted to write with a word of caution on temping. It obviously doesn't help you get pregnant but it confirms ovulation. However if you have problems sleeping or wake up different times then it's not as effective. I have tried temping for 6 months and it didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know if you know what I mean? Also I got a bit obsessed by it!

8DaysAWeek · 22/04/2018 08:33

I agree with Owl

I'm in my first month of temping, on CD23 or so, and if anything it's just confused me more. I have an obvious temp shift which started 2 days before a positive opk. Doesn't make any sense and is stressing me out.

I cosleep with my toddler and so wake frequently through the night. I wonder if this is the issue.

I'm gonna finish this month just to see what happens but don't think I'll bother again!

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 22/04/2018 12:44

Thank you OwlPatrol and 8DaysAWeek I will bear that in mind for when I'm trying at the minute I have people asking if am pregnant because of what they think is a strange food combination but my period is due tomorrow and I want to wait and see what happens tomorrow before I think about testing.
