Irregular periods, GP not looking into it?

I went to the doctors about my irregular, 35-45 day cycles and related issues and the doctor basically said that because my fertility isn't an issue yet (we are trying but it hasn't been a year yet) they're not going to run any tests? Is this normal?
Doesn't affect me too badly because the 1 year is only a few weeks away but I have friends who were diagnosed with pcos etc. when they weren't ttc which is why I'm a bit surprised, and not quite as mad at myself for taking ages to tell someone about it!

Yup. The first three times I went to the gp about ttc they were total dicks. Now close to ivf after ttc two+ years.

Hi, my GP ordered a blood test on day 5(ish) of my cycle and an ultrasound (to rule out PCOS) and that was before the 12 months. My cycles are erratic and longest has been 78 days so far - you are not alone! It might be worth checking your local CCG guidelines, they will recommend what investigations they should do and at what point, even at primary care level.

You might find temping helpful as a way of getting more insight into your cycle while you wait for the year and hopefully some answers from the GP.

It’s reallt easy to do and not woo at all. There’s a book called Taking charge of your fertility, I got a second hand one off amazon and read the ttc relevant bits in an evening.

I was ovulating 4 or so days later every month than I thought I was. I never liked the idea of opks but found taking my bbt every morning easy as anything.

Also, I had 3 mcs in a row then took nearly 13 months to get my next bfp. Felt like the longest bloody year of my life and there was nothing wrong, just took us a while. All going okay with this one so far but I honestly couldn’t ever imagine it happening again so I do feel for you.

Push for some help from the GP. Mine wouldn’t see me till a year was up and I’d booked in a call for the day after what turned out to be the bfp with this one.

Really hope it happens for you soon.

Thanks everyone. I have tried temping and opks and I've had signs of ovulation CD25-26, but I think it may depend on the cycle length. I've made some positive changes health wise (weight loss, exercise and actually eating enough protein) and the last couple of months I've had ewcm for the first time in years!

I do have some blood tests next week for other reasons so if it's a thyroid issue that'll get picked up anyway. If that doesn't show anything, it's only 6 weeks until it's been a year and me and DH can both go for tests.

We ended up going private as we were struggling to get appointments to line up with work. It would have been £150 for the basic appointment, scan for me, semen analysis for DH. In the end they didn’t charge us for the appointment which was very nice of them. Went to GP after the appointment and had bloods done with. Just said have been seen privately and can we do baseline bloods? They were really accommodating.

I would have thought though that as you are trying and have some symptoms (long cycle) and it’s nearly a year it would be reasonable to start doing the basics. Maybe ask again?

I was diagnosed with PCOS at 22. Came out of a long term relationship stopped taking the pill and didn't have a period for six months. Once they established I wasn't pregnant sent me for an ultrasound and blood tests.
TTC number one they wouldn't refer till we had been trying a year but then went for the tests but got pregnant before consultant appointment.
This time we have been trying 18 months with no success and long cycles 60-90 days. Have been for another ultrasound and bloods. Husband is organising his semen analysis.
Have been taking inofolic which seems to be helping as last cycle was 34 days so fingers crossed I ovulate this cycle.

It was a doctor who doesn't normally work there, I haven't met 'my' GP (recently signed up) yet so when I do meet her I will see if she says anything different.

Hypothyroid fits best with my symptoms so I may well have an answer from the blood tests anyway.
