Error in natural contraception?

I am not planning pregnancy, looking for some information.
I've just had my first post partum period (28 days ago, due today) at 14 months after baby.
We have been using tracking and pullout method last few years with no incidents at all. Obviously we planned two babies in this time and all went smoothly.
Anyway, this month my partner did not pull out on day 21 of my cycle. My question is, day 21 is too late to have conceived isn't it?
I'm second guessing myself, I'm sure it's 'safe' (as it can be) but I'm looking for confirmation. Thanks anyone with knowledge on this

If you dont want kids then (1) go get the MAP and (2) sort some reliable contraception.

Well you can never go on dates. Are you tracking in the sense of just dates (ie rhythm method) or using FAM? Get hold of the book 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility to explain. Anyway you can fall pregnant at technically any point in your cycle depending entirely on when you ovulate so if you ovulated around day 21 you could be I suppose. But if you're tracking bbt and cm you would have a much better idea. Might be woeth moving this post to the conception board for more traffic?

Jaxtellerswife · 02/04/2018 09:20

Napqueen, I can't really, I'm usually confident in our methods but restarting my period threw me a bit.

Thanks, yes I've done temp and cm and all those things, it's been pretty foolproof for a few years. I'll try and move the post

Get a period tracker app, it’ll tell you when your period is and when your going to ovulate so you know when days you can and cannot use the pull out method. There’s a chance you could get pregnant but it’s probably unlikely. The most likely time to get pregnant is if you have sex in the days leading up to, the day of and the couple of days after you ovulate.

Jaxtellerswife · 02/04/2018 09:36

Thanks cheese, that's what I was thinking. I have a couple of apps that I've just started reusing now that my monthly bitch is back Grinand they all say the same.
Trying to be responsible and natural, every now and then I like to refresh my mind with it

I got pregnant on day 27 of my cycle (usually 28ish days) so it can happen!

lrwe · 02/04/2018 12:47

Yep I got pregnant day 21 of my cycle both times.

Jaxtellerswife · 02/04/2018 13:27

Can I ask when you were able to get a positive test?

It's very unlikely if you have a regular 28 day cycle but not impossible of course.

lrwe · 02/04/2018 19:04

I’d say it totally depends on your cycle length - mine are on the longer side at 33 days. First time I didn’t test until I was really late because we were away on holiday. Second time I got my first positive on CD32

Ubercornsdiscoball · 02/04/2018 19:07

I tend to get pregnant that late in my cycle

Jaxtellerswife · 02/04/2018 21:09

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm gauging from the answers that although unlikely there is a small possibility of pregnancy this late on in the cycle.
Sobering thoughtHmm. I've previously been like clockwork so I'm hoping this is just one of those fluke no reason weird feelings.
I've spoken to my partner about considering a vasectomy as well but we shall see

It can take a few months for your cycles to regulate when they come back so you really have little idea when you will have ovulated this month (unless you were tracking cm and temps). Totally possible to have conceived.

SweetheartNeckline · 02/04/2018 21:25

If you've only had one postpartum period how do you know you'll have a 28 day cycle?

My luteal phase (time lag between ovulation and period) was also short while I was still breastfeeding.

If you really really don't want to get pregnant, natural family planning can still work but I'd suggest condoms throughout the cycle for a few months until you know where ypj stand.

The Natural Cycless app uses an algorithm to tell you which days are "safe" and when you should abstain. It involves taking your temp at the same time each day, however until it "gets to know you" gives out LOTS of red (abstain / condoms) days, and if you are used to checking your cervix and CM already it may be of less value to you.

Desmondo2016 · 02/04/2018 22:07

You've only had one period. You don't have a 28 day cycle and therefore it's absolutely completely possible to get pregnant on day 21.

Racheyg · 02/04/2018 22:12

I have a spot on 28 day cycle and I got pregnant on day 22. The gp said I either ovulated later or twice ( which I didn't think was possible)

IndominousRex · 02/04/2018 22:14

You need to track for a least three cycles before you’ll have anywhere near a reliable idea of your cycle. I had a 28 day cycle before having a baby, but post-partum my cycle was 35 days (which meant ovulation on day 21).

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 02/04/2018 22:24

One cycle post pregnancy is not enough to know what length your cycle would settle into being or whether it is even back to being regular at this stage. My cycles changed by at least a day or two with each pregnancy and when they did return it wasn't unusual to have a longer, shorter or even skipped period for quite a few months. I would never recommend natural family planning methods immediately following a pregnancy, too risky!

That said, I hope the outcome is as you would like it to be this time OP. I'd recommend giving it a few more months before relying on natural family planning as the only means of contraception.

Jaxtellerswife · 02/04/2018 23:00

I think I failed to mention that unless ttc my partner always pulls out in plenty of time and there's never been so much as a scare.
This time for some unknown reason he didn't and that's why I'm delving into the science side of things. I'm assuming as a one off and with the cycle not established that conception would be very unlikely. I would think.
