Period with copper IUD, think I'm pregnant. Abortion would be necessary if pregnant.

So I got the copper IUD on the 15th January.
Had a heavy period on the 26th, all was fine, lasted about 9 days.
Got my next period on 21st Feb, started really light and remained like that for about three days.
Then it started to get quite heavy with lots of clumps/clots of blood.
All seemed fine until now, on day 10 of my period and my breasts are sore and I'm still bleeding fairly heavily.
I feel nauseous, dizzy and have a lack of appetite.
I had sex about two days before my period. So now I'm worried I'm pregnant and had a random period.
Should I be worried? I'm going to do a test in the morning, just need some help until then.
I could alternatively be getting sick!
My question is, could i be pregnant with the copper IUD? As I am currently on my period but I don't trust it now that my boobs are sore!

@MissWilmottsGhost
Ah I'm so sorry, you're experience sounds incredibly scary.
I hope you're doing okay now. Thanks
I'll take a test now, I think.

Actually if a test is positive and you are bleeding heavily, 111 would be a very good idea.

Willswife · 02/03/2018 19:20

Sounds pretty normal for the first periods after a copper coil insertion.

I still get sore breasts and I've had mine a few years.

I would be inclined to take a test to put your mind at rest. I would say it is highly unlikely that you are pregnant.

MissWilmottsGhost · 02/03/2018 19:22

Thanks peggy it was over 20 Year’s ago now, but a memorable experience. Best avoided IMO.

Do a test just to be sure.

lashestans · 02/03/2018 19:23

@MissWilmottsGhost why would it be a good idea?? Nhs24 is for thins which cannot wait until normal GP hours which being pregnant and bleeding would not be if you were not keeping the baby anyway...? They would just send you home to miscarry if you were already miscarrying

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 02/03/2018 19:26

It's highly unlikely that you are pregnant if you
a) have an IUD
b) are having a period

The copper IUD played havoc with my periods for a while - made them very long, painful and heavy.

Lisette40 · 02/03/2018 19:28

lashestans ectopic pregnancy is more likely with the coil.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 02/03/2018 19:29

so I'm wondering whether or not this is common to have a heavy period with the IUD and still be pregnant.

It's not common to have a heavy period and be pregnant at all, let alone with an IUD in.

peggy2467 · 02/03/2018 19:55

Thank you all so much for the replies. Without your comments I would not have plucked up the courage to take a test. I took the test and it is NEGATIVE. I am so relieved.
I was shaking like crazy. Had to lie down on the bathroom floor to stop myself from shaking like a maniac! PHEW! ❤️

What you do now is make a nice cup of tea and a hot water bottle and curl up in the sofa. Take care.

Glad to hear peggy

Surprised at the number of posters not aware of the risk factors, symptoms and severity of ectopic pregnancy Shock

I was 22 when I had mine, and it was 23 years ago, and I still knew as soon as I found out I was pregnant with a coil fitted that it was a possibility. How is it that now, with better education, and google, that women are so unaware Confused

beingsunny · 02/03/2018 20:16

Yes you
Could be, mine failed I did get pregnant.

That said, your dates don't make sense so it's not that likely.

You may be reacting to the copper, it can make people feel quite unwell if the copper balance in your body is too high, have a quick google search and you will see it's not that uncommon.

MarigoldGloveHotel · 02/03/2018 22:54

I'm glad it's worked out ok Peggy.

Yes, I was thinking of ectopic pregnancy when I suggested calling 111. I didn't want to write my specific concerns on a forum as Peggy seemed frightened enough . I thought I'd let the professionals deal with that.
I was trying to help.

RubberJohnny · 02/03/2018 23:08

Glad the test is -ve. It'd be worth seeing your GP on Monday anyway....after an iud is inserted there is a higher risk in the first few months of expulsion or it embedding on the womb. That can lead to heavy and very painful periods, ESP with clots

SnowBusinessLikeSlowBusiness · 02/03/2018 23:13

How is it that now, with better education, and google, that women are so unaware confused

Surprised you would say that here, considering the likelihood of OP being pregnant at all was ridiculously small, let alone with an ectopic (which she had no symptoms of). Perhaps you should be less rude when you are not quite on the right page?

Queenofthedrivensnow · 02/03/2018 23:33

Hi op. I've had the copper iud 12 months now. I had a few cycles where I was so sure I was pregnant I took tests. I never was but the sore boobs in the op jumped right out at me.
I'm getting my coil out I can't deal with the periods from hell!

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 03/03/2018 07:52

What @SnowBusinessLikeSlowBusiness said.

OP had minimal risk of even being pregnant so why not go and call everyone ignorant became they haven't googled ectopic pregnancy before? How ridiculous.
