Hello! My names Charly and I’m 23 Smile My husband and I have decided to try for our first baby, and I’m so incredibly excited, all I’ve ever wanted is to be a Mother. As this is our first baby, I was wondering if you had any tips on conceiving? Not sure if there’s any particular foods, vitamins etc that could increase my chances? Trying to do as much reading as I can, but also great to get advice from experienced mums! Thank you so much Grin

Get started on folic acid asap - it doesn't help you conceive but it greatly reduces the chances of neural tube defects (like spina bifida) in the baby. You need to take it all the way from TTC (or before preferably) until you're at least 12 weeks pregnant.

Good luck - try and keep it fun and not obsess about it early on although that's obviously much easier said than done! (I am a massive hypocrite for this!)

Get some opks (you can get them cheap on amazon) and start using them from around day 8/9 of your cycle (assuming you have a regular 28 day cycle) twice a day if possible to catch your LH surge. As soon as the test line is as dark as the control line, it indicates you are due to ovulate within the next 12-24 hours so make sure you’re having sex over those days. You can get a basal body temperature thermometer also to chart your body temps which rise around ovulation BUT they’re are tricky to get right as they have to be done at the same time every day, before you get out of bed so if you work shifts or tend to wake up a lot during the night, the readings won’t be accurate.

This won’t necessarily help you conceive but, don’t stress too much. Ttc can be a LONG process. If you and your partner have no health or fertility issues, you still only have a 20-25% chance of conceiving each month so don’t be disheartened if it takes longer than you hoped.

Don’t symptom spot. Honestly, it’s not worth it. It’s very tempting lol but you absolutely will get weird symptoms you’ve never experienced before and your mind will automatically associate them with pregnancy (nausea, cramps, even needing to pee more) but they are normal progesterone-related symptoms and true pregnancy symptoms don’t appear until around 3-4 weeks into a pregnancy. If you are coming off hormonal birth control, your body can take time to adjust and will give you some strange symptoms along the way (also know that your body can take up to a year to fully adjust).

I would take folic acid, vitamin B complex, iron and omega 3. Again, none of these will help you to conceive but they will try and assure your body is in a good condition should you fail pregnant.

There isn’t really anything you can do to help you conceive quicker or easier (trust me, if there was, there wouldn’t be half as many women on this board as there is!) but timing intercourse with ovulation is the one thing that will increase your chances as obviously you need to have an egg there to be fertilised or all your efforts will be futile. Good luck!
