Fertility and Hypothyroidism

Myself and my partner have decided to try for a baby. My last 3 pregnancies were previous to me being diagnosed with hypothyroidism.

We are just curious as to how many couples have gone on to have healthy and successful pregnancies and if they can offer any advice about trying to conceive. I don't want to go to my doctors yet and discuss all of this as they often brush me off. We wanted others stories and opinions. Xx

Tsh needs careful monitoring during pregnancy. Ideally it should be below 2.0 before you start.

Increased risk of miscarriage which can be mitigated by keeping super close eye on tsh.

It took me 8/9 to conceive DC1. A few months after a fairly uneventful pregnancy and delivery, I began to feel like I was quite literally dying and I was initially diagnosed with post partum thyroiditis (my TSH was over 180 to give you an indication of how bad it was)

After I was referred to an endocrinologist, I was then diagnosed with Hashimotos and we found a level of thyroxine that made me feel 'normal' again.

Since then I've fallen pregnant a further 3 times, each time taking no longer than 2/3 cycles. However - two of those have ended in MC/MCC and both times have been when my TSH hadn't been checked for a while and was a bit out of whack. Obviously this could be a complete coincidence. My endo was very firm though that she wanted to see my TSH stable at below 2.0 before I TTC again.

I'm now 23 weeks pregnant and have had my TSH verrrrrry closely monitored throughout. We've made a lot of adjustments to my thyroxine dosage and I seem to be stable for now.

So I guess, in summary, what I'm trying to say is that in my experience, there's absolutely no reason why hypothyroidism needs to cause any issue with TTC but it's something that needs to be very closely monitored.

Best of luck!

Thank you so much for that. I have an appointment with the doctors on the 5th March by then we will have been officially trying for 6 months. Hopefully we will have a blood test then to check ranges and go from there. From your experience it sounds very positive and has put my nerves at ease. So will just start now to enjoy trying for a much loved baby xx
