GBS

Hello

Just had results back from my doctors for a possible water infection (turns out I do have this) but she also advised that GBS was traced on the swabs.

I had no idea what this was & now that I’ve read about it I’m a complete panicking mess and I’m not even preganant yet?

Has anyone else heard of this and if so can you please try to put my mind at ease Sad

By no means a medical expert but if they have diagnosed this before pregnancy, can they give you treatment now? Failing that - i believe it means that when giving birth they need to administer antibiotics. If it has to be found at all it's much better that it's found now. Google Group B Strep Support which is an excellent charity aiming at raising awareness. Don't worry!

GBS comes and goes. That’s why they don’t routinely test in this country, as you could have it at 35 weeks pregnant and it could be gone again by 38 weeks if you see what I mean. If you do fall pregnant however, I would advise asking to be tested before your due date- if found to be positive at that time, they would give you antibiotics in labour xx

@FireandBrimstone the doctor said that it would be pointless giving me antibiotics now cause it could just keep coming back. Just when I get pregnant I need to tell the midwife x

Thank you both for getting back to me, I feel silly getting so worked up about it now but as soon as I started researching it I completely panicked but I suppose it does make sense that it’s better I know about it now rather than later

Don’t apologise! I’m the queen of worrying. I actually paid for a private GBS test when I was about 38 weeks pregnant as I had heard about it. It can’t back negative. Just because you have it now, doesn’t mean it’ll be there if you ever give birth. Try not to worry hun xxx

RD15 · 05/02/2018 20:40

That should have said it came back negative xx

Thank you Smile when the dr first told me I was ok then as soon as it sank in and I read more I started to panick. Worrying is in my nature too! Lol

You’ve really put my mind at ease though. Thank you again x

I have GBS and am due to give birth in just under 2 weeks.
All they do is give you IV antibiotics during labour.

So many women have it and don't know and go on to have healthy babies. Try not to worry xx

Birchgirl · 06/02/2018 05:49

@Mrstobe90 thank you! That’s so reassuring to know, it’s just so scary when you research it x

I try to avoid reading the horror stories lol.

Think about it this way - if it was that bad, it would be routinely tested for.
About a third of women that have it don't even know about it and most babies are born fine.
Only a tiny amount born with it will get ill and in 3 percent it will be fatal.

If it's found that you have it, during labour they give you (I think) between 2-4 doses of antibiotics through IV and once baby is there, they monitor over a 24 hour period to check for signs of infection.

Google always makes everything sound scarier lol

I thought I was doing the right thing by reasearching it, wish I didn’t now haha

That really puts my mind at rest though. Thank you so much!
