Does anyone here have a short luteal phase?

Hi All

I’ve only been TTC for 2 cycles but I have a luteal phase of 10 days which I’m worried will hinder my chances.

Last cycle I started taking B6 from ovulation but AF arrived yesterday and it didn’t lengthen my luteal phase at all.

Does anyone have any other tips on how I can lengthen it? I’ve heard thay Agnus Castus/Vitex can help but I’ve read mixed reviews so I’m not sure if I should try it.

10 days is shorter than average but generally considered sufficient to conceive so don’t worry too much!

Are you recently off the hormonal birth control? If so it can take a few cycles for your luteal phase to lengthen properly and it may do so on its own.

Good luck!

Thanks @caspiana

I’m trying not to worriy but that’s proving to be easier said than done!!

I came off my pill over a year ago now.

I have a short luteal phase also. Got a positive opk on day 14 and then started spotting on day 24, with proper period starting a couple of days later. Does that make my luteal phase about 9 days (assuming I ovulated a day after positive opk) or 12 days, when proper red blood flow started?

I know it is so worrying and frustrating!

@magpie24 I would count it as when your proper flow starts, although spotting isn’t ideal, it won’t stop you conceiving if it starts 9dpo I don’t think. Even if it is 9 days though, I conceived with a 7 day luteal phase which may give you both some hope that it is possible with 9 or 10 days!

My luteal phase is 7 or 8 days - sadly I don't have any advice as I haven't found a way to extend mine yet, but I do know that it is often related to progesterone levels. I've read that 10 days is ok (you only have to worry if it is below 10 days) but if you're concerned you can get a progesterone test. Vitamin B complex is meant to lengthen it, but it'll take a couple of months to kick in (I've been taking it for almost 2 months). You'll need B complex not just B6 because you need the other Bs to balance it out. Im taking 100mg per day from Holland & Barrett. I've also read that Vit C and omega 3,6,9 helps. Good luck!

Ps @caspiana it has given me so much hope to see you conceived with a 7 day LP. Thank you x

9 day luteal phase here and managed to conceive and take to term 3 DC’s.

Sylva123 · 05/02/2018 08:36

@ispeakjive thank you so much for that - I love hearing positive success stories! All I'm reading is how impossible it is with a short LP. Thank you!

When I was ttc #1 my luteal phase was around 8 or 9 days. The longest was 11. The cycle before I conceived was only 7 days. I had a short luteal cycle every month and it didn’t stop me conceiving after 5 months so don’t worry too much. I took vitamin b to help lengthen it but it didn’t seem to do much.

Hotpinkangel19 · 05/02/2018 11:21

Mine is generally 9-10 days, never been an issue, I have 4 DC

Downbutnotyetout · 05/02/2018 11:24

I did. Extended it through combination of thyroid meds kicking in, exercise, diet (ie dropping a few unneeded lbs) and acupuncture. Got pregnant the first month I went to a full 28 day cycle

IlonaRN · 05/02/2018 20:42

Mine is 9 days naturally.
I use a natural progesterone cream to lengthen it, as well as taking B vitamins (the vits on their own do not lengthen it).

Sylva123 · 06/02/2018 07:21

@ilonaRN how long did you use the cream for? I'm tempted to try it but nervous at the same time!

IlonaRN · 06/02/2018 07:42

Hi Sylva123, I used it from confirmed ovulation to menstruation from when I found out that my luteal phase was short. When I finally had a "sticky" pregnancy, I used it to week 20.
I am now using it again, and will do the same.

I'm on CD16 and had a near positive opk yesterday so thinking I should be ovulating in the next few days...which means with my 27/28 day cycle it could be a short luteal phase :( where do you get your progesterone creams and b6 from and what are they called?

Thanks in advance!

MotherOfBeagles · 06/02/2018 08:30

Mine was always 10/11 days so I took evening primrose oil until ovulation. I managed to get pregnant twice in a year, once was a mc but the second is now my 3 month old son. Try not to worry! Not easy I know
