So I've been on the progesterone only pill for about 3 years now, was on the combined for years but changed after seeing a different nurse who said I should never have been on it due to blood clots in the family. To cut a long story short I'm thinking of coming off the pill in a few months to start to try for a baby and I'm a bit worried about how long it takes for the body to get back into sync after taking a pill every day. When I was on the combined pill if I even missed one pill id come straight on, my periods were like clockwork to the day and even time of day! But there's been a couple of times I've forgotten to take this one for a couple of days and nothing has happened which worries me slightly, obviously I'm not expecting to get pregnant first go but I would like it to happen fairly soon once I came off it (if all works well). In that case would I be sensible to come off it earlier in order to get my cycles back (would use other contraception in the meantime) TIA :)

It can take up to 2 years for hormones to leave your system. Or you could be back to normal first month off. No way of knowing.

Ps your period on the combined pill was likely a withdrawal bleed, rather than an ovulatory bleed, so don't read too much into that

But yes. If you are planning to conceive soon, come off hormonal contraceptives and use barrier methods.

And start taking folic acid

Thanks Nimble, it's been a long time since I've had a real period, it was only when I was single a few years ago that I came off the pill full stop just because there wasn't any point in me being on it. I'm 31 but in the back of my mind I'm mindful my mum had the menopause early 40s so I'm a little bit paranoid of leaving it too late iyswim
