HCG and blocked tubes

I have my HCG next week and I strongly suspect my tubes are blocked. But from what I’ve heard from others, they don’t try to unblock them anymore as they are so delicate that it can cause more damage and even result in them being removed. Is this true for all cases of blocked tubes? If they’re blocked, IVF is your only option?

They think I have one blocked tube. In my case, I have been able to conceive but I lose them all and they believe the tube may be leaking fluid into the uterus that’s disrupting the pregnancy.

They’ve told me if it’s blocked it’ll be removed. And there’s a good chance the second one will also need to be removed because usually both are damaged, and so the option would be IVF.

How do they get blocked though? Sorry if silly question I'm just starting to think about what could be wrong with me. X

Pelvic inflammatory disease or STDs can do it.

Endometriosis or precious surgery like cesareans can do it.

In my case, I’ve never had an infection however there’s questions about endometriosis and I delivered my first by caesarean. This problem only appeared when he was about 1, so I’m guessing mine is to do with that.

I had a surgical termination 3 years ago OwlPatrol and I think my issue now is either a) scar tissue caused by the surgery not allowing implantation or, more likely, b) blocked tubes caused by the surgery or the infection I had afterwards. As if I didn’t regret the termination enough already, now there’s the possibility that it has effectively ruined my future fertility and I will never get pregnant again :(

So yeah, basically tubes can become blocked for many reasons but the main reasons are infection/PID or STI’s like chlamydia. It’s actually possible to have had PID and never know but most of the time there are symptoms and you can get it treated before it affects your tubes. How long have you been ttc? I think it’s around 16 months like me, isn’t it? Annoyingly there’s no symptoms of blocked tubes (other than infertility) and the only way to diagnose it is with an HSG, could you push for one?

I’m honestly terrified that they’re going to tell me they’re both blocked. My ideal scenario would be that I have scar tissue just covering the entrance to the tubes because I think they can remove that but if it’s in my tubes, that’s basically the end of the road if they don’t like to try and remove blockages now.

TheCatsPaw that’s just crappy :( I’m trying to be positive but to be honest, from day one I have “known” my tubes are blocked. I’m 28, healthy, good egg reserve, been pregnant twice no problem, I’m definitely ovulating and all of our tests have been fine so far. I’ll be extremely surprised if it’s not blocked tubes. I used to think uterine scarring would be worst case scenario but that would actually be preferable because at least they can remove that. Best of luck with everything!

Bubblegum blocked tubes isn’t actually that bad, in that your chances with IVF, if it’s only tubes, are really high.

Other fertility issues have lower success.

Ok thanks hun yeah onto cycle 15 and got my 30th next month so booking app with dr after then as I have a lot of plans for my birthday so won't be a major problem if I'm not pregnant (obviously Would be an amazing present!)

Do you just ask for blood tests when you first see your gp? It'll take a lot of courage for me to go so I don't want to be fobbed off when I go so want to ask the right questions.

When do you get your results?

Bubblegum89 · 03/02/2018 12:21

TheCatsPaws the problem is, I really can’t afford IVF so anything that means we can still try naturally would be preferable! But if that’s what it is then I guess it’s just on to a new plan. Knowing my luck, I’ll have blocked tubes AND a scarred uterus.

OwlPatrol phone your GP. Tell them you have been trying for over a year, they will tell you that the first thing to do is have 21 day bloods done to check your progesterone levels and make sure you’re ovulating. You’ve been ttc long enough so they won’t fob you off. For me, I had those bloods, OH had a SA done. Then I had to have repeat bloods and when all of them came back fine, there was nothing else my GP could do for me so she referred us to a fertility clinic. So far I’ve had more bloods done there, OH did a second SA and I had an internal US to check lining and follicles. Then I had a consultation about 4 weeks after and got told everything was normal but I KNOW it’s not so I pushed a little and the dr said she wanted to check my tubes (so booked an HSG) and my uterine cavity for scarring (will book a hysteroscopy if necessary) I’ve been really lucky in that the wait times for tests and clinic appointments have been short. First started investigations in October last year. It depends on your area how long you will have to wait for tests (GP tests will be standard times, so days, maybe a week) and then the results appointment. I would definitely get in touch with your GP and get the ball rolling. They kind of tell you what you need to do as it’s all fairly standard procedure to begin with.
