HyCosy/HSG - found an ovarian cyst. What now?

Today I went for a hycosy/HSG. Unfortunately they were unable to administer the test as a transvaginal scan found a 6cm cyst on my right ovary. I’m absolutely terrified now and can’t get in touch with my consultant until at least tomorrow. Has this happened to anyone else? What happens to ovarian cysts? Do they remove them? If so, how? Can anyone shed any light?

It depends what kind of cyst. Some come and go by themselves without any issues. Others have to be surgically removed (dermoid cyst).

Did they say what kind you have?

Footle · 25/01/2018 19:01

In my late teens I had an ovarian cyst that ruptured, causing peritonitis. Most of that ovary was removed with the cyst. I went on to have four children , conceived without difficulty.

Obviously I have no idea what kind of cyst yours is, but the medics coped with mine 50 years ago so there's grounds for hope that yours will be sorted too.

No they didn’t say what kind of cyst it was. As soon as she saw it, her manner changed and she basically said there was nothing else she could do/say and that she would send an urgent report over to my GP. I’ve since had a phone call from the Docs to say they want to see me tomorrow for an urgent appointment so I’m extremely anxious now 😓

Ah man, these docs have no bedside manner.

But the good news is - it's probably nothing serious. I have a 4cm dermoid cyst and at the moment, all they are doing is monitoring it.

I had to have blood tests and regular scans, to keep an eye on if it's growing, but nothing terrifying.

Good luck tomorrow. Hopefully you'll have more answers then x

Thank you. I hope so too.

Yeah she went from being extremely friend’s one minute to being very stand off ish the next which was unnerving.

Have they said anything about your cyst causing infertility?

I'm 14 weeks pregnant, so nope!

My left ovary is non-functioning - they think the cyst cut off the blood supply. But I ovulated from my right every month and a scan showed I had enough eggs in my right ovary to last the rest of my life.

They will probably check that for you too

Mummy081212 · 26/01/2018 09:02

Oh wow. What wonderful news!

Apparently my Mum reckons that clomid can cause cysts on ovaries and I’ve been on clomid since October/November I think. I have signs of ovulation the past 2 months so now I fear the GP will stop my clomid because of the cyst and that leaves me with no chance of conceiving 😓

Do you have PCOS? If the doc stops the clomid, there are other things you can take.

Wait and see what he says, but there are good results from taking inositol

Mummy081212 · 26/01/2018 10:04

No, no PCOS. Initially very irregular cycles - sometimes up to 55 days so hard to pinpoint any ovulation. Then started the clomid, cycles have become more regular now and signs of ovulation but nothing happening hence the HyCosy but now this spanner in the works. I’ve never heard of inositol?!

Ah, ok.

Best speak to your doc - I think there are some drugs they can give you to stimulate ovulation that don't cause cysts, but not sure how available they are (or whether they are contraindicated in some cases).

When's your appointment?

Good luck

@Mummy081212, i know this was posted a while ago, i'm sure things have progressed since. I am going through a similar situation to what you described and wanted to find out if you have any updates on what happened?

Hi. Yes I’d be happy to update!

So just as they were about to do the HSG they found the cyst so wouldn’t carry out the procedure. Shortly after, I went for a scan to see what was happening. Basically, I had no idea but after giving birth to DS1 I had developed PCOS. The large cyst was monitored and I had to stop my clomid immediately as my consultant who also luckily happened to be my GP was concerned that my ovaries were being over stimulated hence the increase in size.

As you can imagine I was utterly devastated to stop the clomid and basically thought that was the end of our journey to conceive our second child.

However...a month after stopping the clomid I fell pregnant and now have a very happy and healthy nearly 20 month old!

Hope this helps and gives you hope x
