Hello, I was hoping for some advice from those in similar situations. We have one 5yr old ds, no issues either getting pg or with pregnancy. I’m now 40. I’ve had 3 mc in the last 2.5 years, the last two were missed. Horrid. No obvious problems found in my NHS bloods, though borderline clotting issue so simply advised to have a 6 week scan next time and then heparin injections. Though they also said they didn’t think this was likely to be an issue. We decided against trying again, too uncertain and heartbreaking, going for scans. The last mc was one year ago. Decided this week we do want to have another attempt despite my fears regarding 40yrs and anamolies. Getting pg has always been immediate, it’s staying pg that is now seemingly a problem. I don’t know whether to simply try again and hope that a viable pregnancy is found at 6 weeks, or whether we should be doing more. We have started with prenatal vitamins (both of us) with a view to trying in Spring.

Part of me thinks that if it happens a fourth time we aren’t likely to try again.

Would it be worth going for a consultation privately with the hope of getting a steer, or in doing that are we commiting to follow up appts and tests that frankly we might struggle to afford, beyond an initial consultation. Is there much to be gained from a “one off” appt?

I’m rhesus negative and not sure if this impacts when it comes to trying to conceive/staying pregnant, or if it only is relevant further along in pregnancy.

I just feel like I need some consistent advice, and not for things to slip through the net. Thanks for listening.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about your losses. It might be useful to go private if it's something you can afford to do. It took us a long time to conceive dd and we had tests done on the nhs but were told there was nothing wrong and that we were unexplained. We eventually conceived naturally after one failed round of ivf.

When we started ttc #2 I fell pregnant quickly twice but lost both babies (MMC and tfmr). We decided to go private for some tests and found that I have Factor V Leiden. They also prescribed progesterone suppositories for me. Fell pregnant straight away and then started on clexane, aspirin and high dose folic acid. I'm 19 weeks now.

These problems I have have always been there but I wouldn't have known had I not gone for those tests. I don't know whether the cocktail of drugs is what's kept me pregnant this time or whether even without them I would have reached this point but ive found being in possession of more information has been beneficial for me.

Good luck.

Op I'm so sorry to hear of your Miscarriages it's a tricky one which unfortunately I have some understanding of.

I had dd at 37 very healthy etc.

I then went on to have two MMC, the first one when dd was almost 4 at almost 18 weeks ds had died at around 15 weeks according to growth scan.

The second was detected by private scan at around 9 weeks. I went private for this and all subsequent treatment and Gynaecologist did a huge amount of bloods on both DP and I. She did find slight raised ANA but otherwise nothing. She also advised taking daily Aspirin if we went ahead to try again.

We personally didn't. I like you find the conception part really easy but staying pregnant another ball game.

I would honestly have a private appointment and discuss all your fears and go from there. Maybe find a consultant specialising in this exact field.

Good luck

Thank you both, that’s really helpful. Only, that must have been awful to find out at 18 week scan. I’m so sorry. I’m going to talk to DH, but I think he will baulk at tests. He will likely say we should see what happens. Hmmm. There is an open evening at a local clinic in a couple of weeks, that might be a starting point. Won’t cost anything either!
Sometimes it helps to just write things down, it has brought clarity for sure.
Welsh, that’s great news you have got to 19 weeks. I’m sure it will be plainsailing from here on.

Being rhesus negative, I'd assume you had the Anti-D injections in your pregnancy and post delivery? My eldest DD is Rh - and she's had these at around 28 and then 34 weeks, with another in the days after giving birth. I also know she had it earlier in her middle pregnancy as she'd had some bleeding. Can you check on your notes? I think the complications arise if your baby is Rh + and you are Rh -. www.nhs.uk/conditions/rhesus-disease/prevention/

Thanks Jane, I did get the jabs, and also after my Erpc too so hopefully I’m ok.

Also being R Neg, I remember being paranoid after both MMC's that I received the Anti D injection.

Good look Op and sounds like a great plan. It certainly won't hurt to attend and find out some more info.
