Anyone conceived after Depo?

Hi there,
DH and I would like to try for another baby but I've been on Depo for nearly 18m until last month and had no idea until a few days ago that it can take 1-2 years for a normal cycle to resume post injections. I am 40, so my chances of conceiving weren't great but in another 1-2 years, they'll be very low. I had no idea, and feel really downhearted now.
Anyone out there conceived successfully after Depo? If it takes so long to get out of your system, I very much doubt it'll happen for us now.😔

I've done so twice op. At age 25 , 18 months after stopping depo and at 35 , 4 months after stopping depo.

I'd been having the injection for between 12-18 months each time.

You have my sympathy as it's horrid to get out if your system.

Good luck with everything.

Thanks MagicFajita. Just wish I'd known all the facts as I fear it's likely sealed the deal for us now.
We didn't think we wanted more when I swapped from the pill (increased migraines with visual disturbance), to Depo, so I guess it's my fault for not looking into it more thoroughly, but my practice nurse raved about it for managing heavy periods (a problem I've always had), and said it was safe for migraine sufferers, so I just went with it. Really upset I've likely blown any slim chance we had now.
Well done to you for winning twice, that's great Smile

Don't give up. You might be lucky with it.

I didn't read about the risks either and I would honestly never use it again even though my family is complete. The withdrawal symptoms are worse than I've known for any hormone based contraceptive.

I think more information needs to be given to women about depo.

MagicFajita · 28/12/2017 12:28

I was put on it for the same reasons as you by the way. I'm still cross about how little health professionals tell you about the negatives.

booboobutt · 28/12/2017 12:39

I did, I don't remember the time frame but like you I was so shocked to find out that it can take a long time for your fertility to resume. It's appalling that HCPs aren't telling women this.

Luckily I did conceive fairly shortly after coming off the depo, so try not to be too downhearted and I wish you luck.

MagicFajita · 28/12/2017 12:43

All I remember booboobutt , is being asked if my family is complete when they offered me the option of the depo jab. I said yes , as I thought it was and I was told nothing more other than the benefits.

GrumpySausage · 28/12/2017 12:47

I have been on it twice, both times for 2 years plus.

I came of it when ttc and fell pregnant both times within 4 months. DC2 due in June.

BastardGoDarkly · 28/12/2017 12:47

I conceived within 3 months at 33, then within 6 at 38.

Don't give up :)

PotteringAlong · 28/12/2017 12:47

I have! 3 times...

The first bfp was 7 weeks after my last injection.
The second bfp was 17 months after my last injection and 11 months after my periods came back BUT only 6 months after I stopped breastfeeding.
The third bfp was 6 months after my last injection.

I had 3 children in 5 years and went back on the depo in between all of them. I’d been on it for 4 years when I first stopped to conceive DS1

Salvadore · 28/12/2017 12:47

Last depo in March, periods back in sept (stopped bf in July), was pregnant by the January, I was 33 though.

MrsHelenBee · 28/12/2017 13:26

Some encouraging messages, thanks everyone.
We're all different and so I guess some are luckier than others. I haven't given up but age isn't on my side so it's come as a shock.
I saw my practice nurse routinely as the pill had always suited me but after having DS2, I was aware my migraines became more frequent, and the flickering/light disturbance was horrible, so I wanted some advice on what to take instead. 18m ago I hadn't considered another baby but I hadn't totally excluded it either. I wonder now if I'd have gone ahead if I'd known how long it takes to clear your system. The nurse said nothing, other than how popular it was and how well it worked in managing periods for a lot of women.
Having said that, I wasn't interested in the coil or an implant at all, and she knew that, so it left few options.

I was on the depot 6 years and conceived in less than 2 months. It is possible. I had expected at least a year. Good luck

Isitwise · 28/12/2017 21:40

I was on depo for 8 years, had one period(hasn’t had them at all for the whole 8 years) and fell pregnant.

Think the last injection was in the February and conceived in the May.

Good luck!

Afreshturkeyplease · 28/12/2017 21:43

Twice for two years each time then concieved pretty soon after. Under 30 though

pinkblink · 28/12/2017 21:46

Almost 3 years after stopping I got pregnant with our first

Depoisthedevil · 03/01/2018 14:43

Hi
I'm nearly 40 and also ttc. My depo ran out in June. My periods started pretty much straight away but I have a 30 day cycle followed by a 15 day cycle which is really annoying.

ew1990 · 04/01/2018 03:02

I had one depo injection and it took 2 years to conceive - don't give up

MinorRSole · 04/01/2018 03:46

I was on it for years but took 2 years for periods to return to normal. I was in my late 30s by then and conceived twins within 2 months of actively trying.

Havingahorridtime · 04/01/2018 05:53

Everyone responds differently. Some people get pregnant really soon after stopping depo. I took 5 years to conceive after taking depo for 3 years. My other babies who I conceived after stopping the pill both conceived within 4 months.
My cycles were non existent for the first two years after stopping depo and were then all over the place for another two years.

MrsHelenBee · 15/01/2018 00:03

Depoisthedevil Glad to hear, as with a few others, that your body was at least attempting to get back to some degree of normality soon after stopping, albeit irregular.
It seems so massively varied when it comes to resuming a cycle after Depo. I had no idea people's experiences on it could be so extreme, and I really do wish I'd made a better informed decision when I opted to try it 18m ago.
I wish you lots of luck, as others have me. Being 40, I don't feel I have 1, 2 or even 3 years when it comes to ttc. Rather wishing I was 5-10 years younger now!
Let me know how you get on.

Thank you MrsHelenBee.
No I don't feel time is on my side either. Every month that goes past I feel a little bit more panicked.
Yes I wish i had been more informed too.
Have you had any kind of withdrawl bleeds yet?
