Norethisterone caused period to screw up?

I started my periods when I was 12. They have always been very regular 28 days. In the past, I’ve been on and off the pill a few times but my cycle never changed. My period always continued to be 28 days. I’m 28 years old now and I came off the implant in December last year as we decided to start ttc. Cycle came back straight away and settled into 28 days again immediately, ov’ing on CD14 like clockwork.

In August, I started taking Norethisterone as I was going away and af was due and I didn’t want it to ruin my time away. The doctor told me that it was basically the same as the pill and so I figured since I’ve never had any issue coming off the pill in the past (which I’d done around 4 or 5 times) I decided to use them. Came off them after a week, waited the three days they say it takes to have a withdrawal bleed and sure enough, I had a withdrawal bleed when I expected it.

However, in September, I didn’t ovulate until cd20 and after that I was 4 days late so had a 38 day cycle (from withdrawal bleed to real period) October I ov’d CD11 and had a 26 day cycle. This month, I ov’d on CD18 and so not expecting af until Tuesday making it a 32 day cycle. I can’t figure out any other reason for this other than it being the Norethisterone.

Have I really messed up here? I thought I’d be “safe” as I’ve never had any issues coming of any kind of hormones ever and I’m kind of a pro when it comes to getting on and off birth control lol in my whole 11 years of using contraception, my cycles have never been messed up by it. I know I’m ovulating as it was confirmed by blood tests but now I’m panicking that I’ve made ttc even harder for myself. Been ttc for a year with zero pregnancies and now I’m worried that taking the Norethisterone has effectively made me start back from square one. Has anyone else been in a similar position? As in, totally normal regular cycles, never affected by birth control either on it or off it, but then had issues after coming off Norethisterone?

Norethisterone for stopping periods is a much higher dose than the amount in the contraceptive pill so it is probably that that is causing the havoc with your cycle

Ah crap. Thanks dementedpixie so I’ve basically caused myself to start again from scratch? I read online it can mess up your first cycle after taking it but is it fairly common to mess up other cycles too?

I took it in Aug to delay my period for a holiday extending my cycle that month from 27 to 31 days. The following month I had 29 day cycle and from then onwards it went right back to being 27 days again. I'm sure you will return to normal shortly :)

I’ve taken that quite a few times in the past. I can’t recall it causing problems with my cycle though.

I’d be surprised if it has messed up your cycle for this many months, but I’m by no means an expert!

If it’s not the Norethisterone, is there any other reason why my cycles could just be suddenly a bit all over the place?

Dunno, that can happen sometimes I think. I doubt it’s from Norethisterone which you took as long ago as August but like I say, I’m not an expert! Maybe make a GP appointment if you’re concerned?

I’ve been referred to a fertility clinic now so I might mention it to them. I suppose is not really a big deal but I just found it strange how they’ve just got so random these last few months! I’m starting to think I’ll never understand anything my body is doing whilst ttc lol

Yeah I know, our bodies like to fuck with us. Most annoying. My AF randomly rocked up a whole week early last cycle. Which has literally never happened before, so why now ffsHmm. I hope you get some answers soon, I know how bloody frustrating this fandango is
