Do I need to see a doctor? (Possible TMI, sorry)

I’m really worried about my cycle. Everything online says a healthy menstrual cycle is up to 35 days, but mine is always 42. I have really heavy painful periods, and always have done, although recently they have been better (possibly since I started using a cup?) last year my period pains were so bad I couldn’t move, so I called 111 and they told me to go to urgent care, but then when I got there I was more or less ignored. The doctor said that all women have period pain, and that it’s normal. I don’t know whether this was maybe because he had obviously never had a period himself, I explained that it wasn’t normal for me at all, but nothing helped, and he told me to try a hot water bottle 🙄

When I finally saw a female doctor, she prescribed me an anticoagulant, which actually helped a lot, and booked me some hormone tests. Unfortunately, the hormone test were postponed, and therefore weren’t done in the right part of my cycle and were therefore pointless.

After all this, I pretty much just gave up and decided not to pursue it any further as it was just upsetting me, however now I am trying to conceive and I’m worried that my long cycles and painful periods are a bad sign 😕 Should I go to a GP about this? I don’t want to waste their time and I don’t want to be fobbed off again but I’m so worried that I can’t have a baby...

Sorry for such a long post, I didn’t want to drip feed!

Are you currently trying to conceive? Even with some problems with periods it doesn't mean you will definitely have problems conceiving but I think maybe you should go back to the GP anyway? It's not fair having to live with so much pain

User24681012 · 24/11/2017 16:12

@blue2014 I am currently trying, I’m getting really down about how long I have to wait between each fertile period, but I’m worried the doctor will think I’m being a hypochondriac

Yes go to the gp, and ask for the hormone tests to be redone at the correct time. Do you have any other symptoms of endometriosis?

User24681012 · 24/11/2017 16:19

@Bobbiepin that’s what I thought the problem was originally, but the doctors have all been really dismissive... I really do think there’s something wrong with me, but I don’t want to be wasting their time if I’m wrong

If you think there is something wrong you need to persevere. I think it would be worth specifically requesting a female doctor.

Thanks @Bobbiepin Smile I’ll make an appointment

Sounds a lot like endo. Doctors have only just in the last couple of months been issued guidance on it and be told to bloody well listen to women with symptoms. Please persevere OP. Good luck x

Thanks @Melamine , that’s what I always thought it was too, so I’ll have another try!

Don't worry about wasting their time, it's their job to listen to you and investigate. AT the end of the day, a normal cycle is considered up to 35 days and yours is 42 days so any GP worth their salt would send you for tests. If you haven't been ttc for long them you may well have nothing to worry about from a conception perspective but you shouldn't have to live with horrible cycles like this anyway. I say request to see a female doctor.

Hi OP, my cycles are very similar. My cycles are variable but over the 6 months I've been TTC it's been an average of 42 days. Periods are either heavy or super light but still with a lot of clots. Also get spotting, nausea before my period and other hormonal symptoms. I've decided I'm going to see the GP.
