contraception and sex drive

Can anyone advise me on contraception? We have two lovely children and are probably not going to have any more but when it comes to contraception my husband and I are rubbish! I am considering the coil (the one that has hormones in it)but the gp said that your periods can become very light or even stop. My concern is that it will affect my sex drive. When I am not fertile, ie when I am pregnant or breast feeding, my sex drive almost vanishes. Has this happened to anyone else who has had a coil fitted?

I am glad I didn't have the coil fitted.

I had never tried progesten-based contraception - with the Mirena/hormone coil is - so I went for Cezarette, a pill.

It killed my sex drive.

Entirely.

For the first time ever in my adult life.

non-hormonal coil?

Bootoo · 15/04/2007 22:37

Is the non-homonal coil as reliable?

no - but is still 95% or something - better than no sex drive.

expatinscotland · 15/04/2007 22:53

I think it's just as reliable.

Yep. Totally killed it. Still not brilliant nearly 4 years after having it out, tbh. I shall certainly advise my daughters to steer clear of any hormonal contraception. I mean, Jesus H, we can put a man on the moon but we still can't prevent pregnancy without resorting to whacking great doses of foul stuff! If men had to take this stuff, they wouldn't. That is all.

Twice, apparently. Sorry.

expatinscotland · 15/04/2007 23:28

I agree, duchesse.

DimpledThighs · 16/04/2007 09:06

I agree duchesse (could it possibly be because it is a female concern )

linjasmom · 16/04/2007 21:29

I have used a non-hormonal coil, have not gotten pg and it did NOT kill my sex drive (had that with the pill, don't ever want to experience that again!!!!). Doesn't mean my choice would be right for you, of course, but I would use it again, especially as you already gave birth. Hope this helps.

scorpio1 · 16/04/2007 21:32

i had a mirena and it didnt kill my sex drive.i loved my mirena.after about 3 months i had no periods.i have only had it taken out because we are ttc again.i will have another one after i have a baby! HTH

Bootoo · 16/04/2007 21:50

Thanks, seems the general concensus is to steer clear, especially as I am likely to be affected by the hormones. Will have to think of something else. Have to say, I am a bit with funnypeculiar about the whole process. Just not very good with condoms, unless they have improved over the last few years. The only one we could find the other night had expired in 2004! Probably past its best..
