11 day luteal phase

Hi, so I’ve been off contraception since June, I fell pregnant after about 6 weeks but unfortunately the pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks. I’ve been reading a lot online about the luteal phase. My luteal phase is only 11 days and I have a 26 day cycle, I’ve read that anything under a 10 day luteal phase can be considered a fertility problem and can cause miscarriage. And 12-14 is considered normal. So I’m right in the middle of short and “Normal”. I just want to hear other people’s stories on having an 11 day luteal phase and if people done anything to try and lengthen their luteal phase. .

TIA

Hi,

I have a 10 day LP.
I’ve only just realised this as I only started to use opks this cycle.
I do however have a 2 year old, I’m not sure if I had a short LP back then or not as it wasn’t doc technical back then we just had sex everyday

I’ve just actually realised I’d miscalculated and mine is only a 10 day luteal phase .

I took vitamin b6 and vitamin c and it lengthened my luteal phase from 9-10 days to 13 days. Took a few months but it worked and my DS is now 11 months 😊

A luteal phase defect prevents the egg from implanting, Which is why it can be difficult to conceive. With a 10 day luteal phase you may find it fine and can lengthen no problem.

I have a 9 day luteal phase usually. However after acupuncture I was able to have an 11 day luteal phase last cycle. I take vit c to help and will take b6 if nothing helps this cycle. I wanted to try a few things before introducing others. I’ve been TTC 14 months with a loss at 10 weeks in February Which was lost due to another medical issue.

I was going to buy some vitamin C and vitamin B6 today and start them both straight away. Do you know of any reason why I shouldn’t do this MouseLove ? Just with you holding off taking the B6 I wondered if there are risks that come with it?
Thank you for your replies

There’s risks with everything unfortunately. B6 can lengthen your cycle but in weird ways so I wanted to be sure of my research before taking it. Usually you should take b6 as part of a complex vitamin. I would suggest you do a little research and then go for it. If you have adverse effects then you can always stop taking. I wanted to give acupuncture a good go first before taking b6, I do have some at home waiting for me, but not started taking yet. I’ve been TTC for 14 months and just started investigations so I’ll probably wait and see what they say first.

Kkk87 · 06/11/2017 13:47

Ok, thank you. I’m going to start taking them. I’m also enquiring about the acupuncture . Good luck to you

For an acupuncture specialist in fertility have a look on the British acupuncture council website. You should be able to find them local to you. My acupuncturist charges £50 for initial consultation and £39 per session.

You can get it on the nhs but not for fertility unfortunately usually. Only pain management.

Thank you, that’s helpful

10-16 days is normal.

Mine was always 10 days and no probs conceiving.

Kkk87 · 06/11/2017 19:07

Thank you ShowOfHands that gives me some hope. Did you ever try and lengthen your luteal phase ? Have you ever experienced MC?

If there’s any more success stories I’d love to hear them so I don’t crack up

Never lengthened my luteal phase because it's never been short.

dorkusmalorkus · 07/11/2017 05:58

Hi, I lengthened my luteal phase by taking high dose b6 alongside a complex b vitamin and it seemed to work, as I got pregnant the next cycle,. I also took vitamin c but only upto ovulation as I read that it can create an environment that is too acidic for the sperm. My husband also took zinc tablets. At its worst, my lp was 7/8 days long. The first month was lengthened to 12 and the next I was pregnant. Good luck Flowers

Kkk87 · 07/11/2017 08:46

Aww thank you dorkusmalorkus

Thai next question might sound a bit daft but. When people lengthen their LP did you ovulate sooner or did your period come later ? Thanks

OP posts:
MouseLove · 07/11/2017 11:39

Your period comes later. Usually if you have a short luteal phase you have shorter cycles. For example, on a 25 day cycle I’ll ovulate on day 16. Which is great as I have enough time to grow a juicy egg, but not enough time to let it implant. So ideally you want to ovulate as close to day 14 as you can. But also have as close to a 14 day luteal phase.

At 10 days though, I would not be worrying about this unless you’ve been TTC for over a year. You’re well within the norm having only been TTC since June. X

Kkk87 · 07/11/2017 12:21

Thank you. I’m worrried more as like I said unfortunately I had a mc at 6 weeks in September and I’ve read a short LP can cause early mc . I’m terrified it’ll happen to me again if I fall pregnant again . X

A true short luteal phase doesn’t even allow the egg to implant as there’s not enough time for the lining to be thick enough as it will start to break down before an egg is implanted. 10 days is on the shorter side of normal. But still normal. It might be worth you looking at your diet and supplements in a bid to try to lengthen in the meantime, but try not to worry since you have only been TTC since June. Most healthy couples take up to a year. It may happen for you soon, you may just be noticing the luteal phase more after your loss.

Caspiana · 07/11/2017 13:31

I conceived with a luteal phase of 7 days. (Or at least it had been the two months prior to conception, obviously I don’t know if it lengthened!) Eggs can implant as early as day 6, so it’s definitely possible but obviously 10 days it longer gives you a better chance.

The month I conceived I took b-50 x2, and 800mg vitamin E which a study has shown to improve luteal function.

I was worried having a short luteal phase could be linked to miscarriage too but i asked my doctor and she said that wasn’t the case, once egg has implanted a message goes to corpus luteum to keep going. I’m 12 weeks on a Sunday and had a good scan last week so fingers crossed she was right!

Good luck!

That’s lovely news, congratulations. Also gives me hope thank you

Can someone please just confirm for me that it’s ok to take vitamin b6 AND vitamin B complex together ?
TIA

OP posts:
Caspiana · 07/11/2017 20:15

I’m principle yes! How much B6 is in the complex? If it’s like 10mg, then take a separate B6 of 50 or 100mg should be fine.

Kkk87 · 07/11/2017 20:23

Thank you caspiana .. There is 1.4 mg B6 in the complex and I’m taking 1x50mg B6 also. Do you think it’s better taking 100mg of B6? X

OP posts:
Caspiana · 07/11/2017 20:30

Totally depends - I took 100mg the month I conceived but that could be completely irrelevant! I had been taking 50mg the previous 2 cycles and not seen an improvement. Maybe start at 50mg and increase if you need? X
