Fertility Appointment

I have an appoinment on Monday with my local NHS hospital for fertility testing. We have been waiting quite a while for this appointment and are reluctant to cancel it because we know we might have to wait for a really long time before we can be seen again.

My predicament is .... it's going to be the wrong time of the month! The thought of having a vaginal ultrasound whilst menstruating is just awful. I telephoned the department and was told not to cancel. Has anybody else been in this predicament before? I know they've probably seen every scenario before but when it's actually you, it's quite off putting!

I had one last month whilst at the end of af and had the same concerns. I had nothing to worry about! I was given a sheet to put around my lower half. The us lady then passed the wand under the sheet to me and I positioned it so she didn't see anything. The wand has a condom type thing on it so that just goes straight in the bin at the end. Obviously wear a pad not a tampon. My gynae told me that earlier in the cycle is the best time to have it so I'm sure they do see it all the time (totally understand what you mean about when it's you though!).

Thanks Bestyboo - that has really reassured me. Well it will be early on the cycle - not relishing it at all. Did you get your results back the same day?

I was on my period (albeit light flow) for an ultrasound a few months ago. Was freaked out about it beforehand but it was acrually fine. I told the lady immediately when I went in and she didn't seem fussed - they really have seen it all before!

Chattycat78 · 30/09/2017 07:40

Been there. It was fine.

This happened me once too. I was so happy to have the appointment that I kind of didn't care. They knew where I was in my cycle so I just went to the loo and removed tampon before they started- like others have said, there's a condom over the thingy they just bin it straight after and I'm sure they've seen all sorts!

I had exactly the same thing, OP, phoned the hospital and they said 'Oh, don't worry about that, they've seen it all before.' Went and, true enough, they didn't give a monkeys and everything was fine. They ask you which cycle day you are on anyway. Honestly, nothing to worry about.

Thanks ladies. You have all really reassured me. Ironically AF hasn't arrived, so hoping (psychologically) it will wait until after the appointment tomorrow at 2.30pm!! Whilst I am dreading it, I am hoping we might get a few answers tomorrow....

Follow!!

I have my transvaginal US booked in for next week. Some signs of AF arriving over last few days but nothing, chance it might not arrive at all (irregular periods) but knowing my luck it will appear on or just before scan day!! I am interested to see how you get on? And do you get the results on the day as I presume you see the screen and they talk you through what they are looking at? I've been told I have possible PCOS but scan is going to confirm it. Dr told me that if AF arrives on scan day I would need to re book it but looking at what other people say they have experienced... perhaps not!!

Betsyboo87 · 01/10/2017 19:49

There was a screen in front of me and the technician told me what she was looking at - I couldn't really make anything out! She told me that the consultant would need to review the images/measurements but everything looked very normal to her. I heard from the consultant a couple of days later and she confirmed everything was normal. I did go private so not sure if that makes a difference.

Well had the appointment and not really any further forward! I basically had my height and weight taken down for my BMI recording. We then went in and met with the Consultant and he asked us both a lot of questions such as how long we'd been ttc, ages etc. Not sure we're going to proceed going through the NHS as basically were told that at my age (40) I am not eligible for any NHS funding, even though the CCG is meant to fund all women up to the age of 42. We're looking into private clinics, but will write to CCG and appeal - you're supposed to be entitled to 3 rounds. Even 1 round would save us a lot of money. Feeling a bit down about it all at the moment, especially when you work in the NHS and see where some of the money goes!
