10 days late, negative pregnancy tests, help!

I'm 36, and have been TTC for over a year now (got pregnant once, but then miscarried 6 weeks later).

Every month when AF arrives we're devastated that it hasn't worked again.
Just when we were getting used to that, this month AF hasn't shown up at all and I'm 10 days late (normally 32 days like clockwork).

We were so excited, and did several tests, but all are showing negative and I don't know what to do.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there any point in going to the doctor? (I remember last time I was pregnant, he said their tests are even less sensitive than shop-bought ones).

I wish I could either just get my period and get it over with, or get a positive result and get out of this hellish limbo Confused

Could you ask your doctor to do a blood test to confirm your results?

2good · 18/09/2017 13:15

Yeah I was thinking that about bloodtests, just not sure how long to wait. If I go to soon and it's still showing negative, it won't help... Maybe if I get to the 2 week mark. Thank you

Yep - doc tests are less sensitive than the most sensitive home test.

I'm afraid the answer is to wait and see.

10 days late is quite late and should be showing on a home test by now, unless you ovulated later than you thought. Are you temping?

Thanks nimbleknitter, no I'm not temping, was using opks on and off, but gave up as I kept getting negative and it seemed to add to the stress. We dtd a lot, particularly from day 10 to 20 every month, so I'm pretty sure we don't miss it but I could be wrong.
There's always cm around day 17/18, but then this month I got it on day 31&32 as well which was strange.

Very very occasionally (it's happened about 3 times I think) I have have completely missed a period, last time was about 3 years ago, I went to see the practice nurse who gave me a stick to pee on (I'd already done several at home) it was negative, she said that sometimes it just happens for reasons nobody knows and on a population level it's quite common. Although weirdly at least two times i skipped a period were in January, i did wonder if it was down to being totally out of routine in December. periods have been normal before and since. Worth going to see your practice nurse at least to put your mind at rest.

It could be an anovulatory cycle (everyone gets the odd one) where you just don't ovulate.

Might also explain the two bouts of fertile cervical fluid - if you didn't ovulate first time round, your body often tries again.

You can confirm ovulation through temping (your temp shoots up after ovulation, as a result of increased progesterone). You can also measure your resting heart rate (increased body temp raises your heart rate).

Finally, you can get a blood test transfusion check progesterone levels. You can also get an ultrasound to check for cysts (sometimes they can also see a bruise on your ovary, which is a sign that an egg has been released).

I'd give it another week. Either your period will show up or you'll get a positive home test. If neither, I'd give it up as a dud month and start again, although will be difficult to monitor without a period (no CD1!). So maybe think about temping next month, just to see what's going on?

Not transfusion. Bloody phone

2good · 18/09/2017 14:08

Thanks so much nimbleknitter I will try that for next.. and will give it another week before doc this month Smile

Definitely go to doc if you think it will help but we warned - unlikely they will do anything for a one-off missed period.

(Not meaning to piss on your chips, but forewarned is fore armed and all that)

2good · 18/09/2017 22:36

No that's okay, my chips are fairly drowning in piss at the moment anyway Grin, so I agree, no point wasting more money on doc visit at this moment
