Conception after IUS?

Hi everyone, first time post here. Hope its in the right place!

I have an IUS fitted, the Merina. Its a coil that delivers hormones locally only, it doesn't enter bloodstream. I have had it fitted for nearly 3 years, and had one before for 5 years. I have reasonably regular periods, they r very light though.

We would like to start trying soon, and I'm a teacher so an October baby / January conception would be ideal. My question is how far in advance do I need to have the Merina taken out before we start trying? It's our anniversary in October so i was thinking at the end of that month. That would give me a couple of cycles before starting to try. Any experience of getting pregnant after the Merina would be appreciated xx

I am a teacher too. And unfortunately, it doesn't always work like clockwork. I'd remove the IUS asap and maybe use condoms? It can take up to a year after IUS removal for your body to remember how to have regular cycles with ovulation.

I've been ttc 18 months. 6-12 is about average... but you could fall pregnant in any cycle. So ttc sucks. It can be brutal. And there is no such thing as control.

I do hope it doesn't take you long and you conceive when you want to, but many people find it doesn't quite match up how they thought it was going to go.

Thanks for your reply. I am still ovulating and cycles are pretty regular, between 28-31 days. I would rather not use condoms, especially during our anniversary. Having rarely used them with my husband they tend to kill the vibe! I totally understand that it may take a while but that wouldn't make me start trying earlier than we feel ready to, so dont see a huge advantage to having it out early. All documentation says that fertility returns immediately, and my GP says I need to use another form of contraception immediately upon removal but wanted other peoples experiences of getting pregnant after having it removed. Thanks x

@Chedburgh I've only just started ttc after mirena removal on the 31st August. All advice from the clinic and gp is that fertility returns to normal immediately and since we wanted to try I should start taking folic acid right away.
So far my cycle seems to be heading according to plan and ovulation tests are showing positive so it appears I'm ovulating in my first cycle. Obviously no guarantee I'll get pregnant right away and my only other reference is my sister who fell pregnant on cycle 3 after mirena removal.
Hopefully some of that is helpful to you

I had the mirena coil for 4 yrs with no periods at all. It was taken out in May 2012 and I was pregnant by June 2012. So yes your body goes back to normal straight away.

That's not to say that you will get pregnant straight away. It can take months to get pregnant for some people. I'm currently on my 2nd month ttc after having my 2nd mirena taken out in August. So I'm not taking for granted that I'll fall quickly again. But if it does take months to get pregnant then I know it's not because of the mirena

Yes I know I cant expect to get pregnant straight away, but wanted to know if I need to leave a few cycles before we start trying, for things to get back to normal. I know they advertise that your fertility returns immediately, but wanted to see if people's real experience matched with that. Thanks ladies
