Hello!! Smile I'm new here so not used to all of the abbreviations so bare with!! I would like to cut a long story short but would like to tell my story so far to keep anyone who cares to read it in the loop and to get the best advice from it.

So basically, I recently went to see my GP due to going 4 months without a period. I'm in a long term, financially stable relationship, etc, no children as yet but myself and my partner feel ready to start trying, the whole period problem being the first hurdle we are faced with.

I stopped taking the pill in December 2015 for personal reasons (not ttc at this stage) and my periods have been irregular scince. I have gone a month, possibly two? without a period (i've never tracked them, they have always just come whenever) but never 4 months, which is what prompted my visit to the GP.

During the appt I found GP very helpful giving me lots of information and we got talking about planning for pregnancy. GP sent me off for a blood test, testing for lots of things and by pure coincidence a couple of hours after having my blood drawn my period came!

I went back to see GP 1 week later to discuss the results which she said all came back normal and seemed happy with. I obviously told her that my period came and she has now sent me off for another test that she explained was a 21 day progesterone test all based around ovulation. She has told me to go for the blood test on a particular day which she worked out based on the first day of my period (yay!) and she also handed me a RADIOLOGY REQUEST for a scan that she said would be just to check that everything else was OK. We then got talking in a lot of detail about ovulation (i'm a newbie!) that I forgot to ask her more about the scan. I have been told I will get an appt through the post but that's all I know.

I have scince come home and with the help of DR. Google come up with 2 possible scans that it could be... one being a standard ultrasound scan to check ovaries, etc, and the other being a transvaginal ultrasound which I have read horror stories on!! Lots of things that I have read are people saying that it's no worse than a smear... !!confession!!... I keep getting reminders about going for smear as I haven't had it yet!! I know I should and I will definitely be booking it very soon as I know it's important and will be a good step in planning pregnancy.

So a very long story short I am looking to see if anyone has had a transvaginal scan before? Or if anyone has a similar story to mine and what kind of scan they had?

A friens had the same when her periods played up and it was tranvaginal. I have had lota of transvaginal scans myself for pregnancies.

Theyre absolutely fine and nothing to worry about at all. i actually find smears more uncomfortable.

Be warned tho - the scanner looks huge but it is literally the tip that goes in.

Sounds like you have a very proactive GP which is great. my friend was pregnant within a couple of months of her scan Grin

I've had loads, really cant say enough that it is absolutely nothing at all!!! Feels abit strange yes, but one million % nothing to get worried about. When you get your appointment letter it will say whether its abdominal or TV. They tend to just do abdo if its a 'well just check' type scan.

RefuseTheLies · 05/09/2017 20:54

I've had a gazillion transvaginal scans and did not find any of them in any way uncomfortable or painful.

I've had lots of transvaginal scans and they are absolutely fine. You will have a sheet over your bottom half do you don't feel exposed. I've only ever had one smear and that was over 15 years ago. I do remember that being a little uncomfortable, more so than the scan.

It will be a transvaginal scan otherwise they can't get a good view of your ovaries.

Please do go for your smear - it really does save lives! X

Honestly neither the smear or transvaginal scans are uncomfortable.
As one pp poster said, the probe they use looks huge but only part of that goes in. They will probably use that as it does give a much better view of the ovaries.
I've had a fair few tv scans in pregnancy and one due to a never ending period before I fell pregnant with this baby. They measured all the follicles in my ovaries and the uterine thickness as I was about to ovulate as I'd had a positive ovulation test that morning as well. She could see which follicle was dominant and everything. It was really great to see things working in there. I fell pregnant that month.

Good luck op, hope you get some answers in regards to your periods 😊

Transnational scan is literally nothing. Lady, you are hoping to get a baby outta there. This is a little wand and it doesn't hurt anymore than sex, although the surroundings are less fun ;)

Ragusa · 05/09/2017 21:41

Transvaginal ! Not transnational!!! Haha

NoParticularPattern · 05/09/2017 21:42

I've had a few transvaginal scans and they've all been fine. Some discomfort when they have to dig for my left ovary, but that's probably because I'm fat haha!

The best bit about it was that they only do they with an empty bladder so no desperate need to pee!! Honestly they are fine, and will hopefully give you a clearer picture of what's going on :)

Merida83 · 05/09/2017 21:45

I've had multiple transvaginal scans. Some for investigations some while pregnant. Honestly They are painless. Smears are way worse. The scans are fairly quick and easy but are a useful form of test. Honestly they are nothing to worry about at all!

Hope it goes well if you do have one!
