Is it worth trying for a year with suspected PCOS?

Or should I just call my doctor now?

Hi fellow ttc-ers!
I'm a longtime lurker on this board. My DH and I have been trying for a baby since February (not long in the grand scheme of things, I totally understand that!) but my cycles are all over the place.

I was on the pill and expected a few months of irregular periods but my post-pill cycles have been 39 days, 62 days, 34 days, 38 days and my current cycle is 46 days. I am a healthy BMI and am aged 31.

I have many of the symptoms of PCOS (e.g. lots of dark, wiry facial hair) and so I'm just wondering if it's worth waiting until February 2018 to go to the doctor? Or am I just being impatient? (probably)

Thanks

Hello,

The doctor would investigate now with irregular cycles and possible PCOS. If it's confirmed then you also meet the criteria for early referral to the specialist so you might as well go xx

Thank you so much for your reply! I wasn't sure if I was just being impatient.

Definitely start the process. I really wish I'd started investigating sooner.

Thank you. And good luck to everyone TTC!

Just to warn you OP, PCOS wasn't enough to get me an early referral, I had to wait a year. I know that some women advise claiming you've been trying for a year with no luck.

The thing that made the difference for me was going on a low GI diet, PCOS can also mean insulin resistant. Within 6 weeks of being on the diet I had lost weight and got my period, from then on I was on a 29 day cycle and could start to track it reliably.

Thanks @peachgreen - hopefully my GP will be more sympathetic.
And I've been considering trying that @Katescurios - I eat a fairly low carb diet already but maybe I need to be a bit more dedicated!

I'd go to the doctor anyway. Having tons of facial hair isn't what you'd normal expect so they could investigate your hormone levels on those grounds. Depending on how they are, they might have you scanned and a few blood tests performed. However, in my experience not all GPs are helpful so you might need to push for things a little.

Thanks!
