PCOS- just been diagnosed, any advice?

I went for a Hycosy this week because after getting PID I was terrified my tubes were damaged. Both tubes are fine thankfully but I have been diagnosed with PCOS. I suspected I had them as I have long irregular cycles and facial hair (ugh). I see so many mixed messages about this condition and I know it's a spectrum- the doctor said my case didn't seem severe she described it as "medium".

Cycles so far since coming off the pill in January have ranged from 32 to 43 days so not too irregular? I think I've been ovulating based on EWCM, pains and OPKs but know these can't be relied on with PCOS. Does anyone have any experience and advice with this condition? Thank you.

The best thing you can do for PCOS is to go on a low carb diet. I did it on the advice of my doctor and reversed it completely.

Low carbing is hard but worthwhile. The best thing that came with my diagnosis was a doctor finally understanding that I wasn't exaggerating the severity of my pain and bleeding though. Mefanemic acid on prescription is a good pain killer if that's something you struggle with. Although having been on the mini pill for 6 years, my irregular cycle seems to have settled into 16 days Envy

I think having finally having a name for condition can be a massive weight off your shoulders and make things slightly easier. Hopefully someone helpful can come along now Grin

Thanks both yes it is a weight off my shoulders. Luckily I don't have heavy bleeding or pain just long cycles, late (or no) ovulation and excess hair. Low carbing is something I've thought about it will be a complete diet overhaul though but think it's something I should look into. Is it possible to conceive naturally with PCOS?

Metformin can help those with pcos to conceive as it regulates cycles and helps release of the eggs. It's used for treatment diabetes but licensed for pcos for this reason.

It does give you terrible stomach ache, wind and the poos for the first week though. If you're prescribed it try to start it when you're free for a few days BlushConfused

Also look up inositol, its a supplement

MadameDeZafon · 01/09/2017 18:18

Best thing i did was a low carb diet and cut out sugar completely Smile

Fauxtatoes · 01/09/2017 18:26

Metformin does artificially what low carbing does naturally without the nasty side effects. Metformin lowers blood glucose therefore keeping insulin low which is why it's used for diabetes. Low carb is free and it will improve your overall health.

I conceived naturally low carbing!

I reversed my PCOS with a low carb diet too, and had 2 children in my mid-late 30s after being told at 28 I'd never conceive without help. Low carbing was definitely worth a try before metformin, for me. Ended up not needing anything else. Hope you get good results from whatever you try, Flaming. Flowers

Yes I would recommend a low GI diet and inositol before metformin as it's not pleasant. If you search GI diet for pcos on amazon you can get the book pretty reasonably Smile

Ok great it's good to know there are natural and free ways to help this thank you.

Thanks for posting very interesting stuff! Ive got my ultrascan on Monday to see if I have pcos!

Can I ask how you were diagnosed? Ive had blood tests one show showed testeroine four times higher than normal and my lh and fsh ratio was 1:4.

Ive joined the gym two months ago whilst waiting for my scan, hopefully that may help!

Is it possible to conceive naturally with PCOS? I have it and I did. Using LCHF (low carb high fat) diet. Blood tests showed I have 'high levels of male hormone', not sure where on the spectrum this put me.

Littleonek · 04/09/2017 11:54

So I had my internal ultrascan today! Ive got 15 cysts on each overy. So she thinks its likely i do have pcos! Good news is my overies and lining looked ok. Waiting to see my dr on Friday for next steps.
