Do you think supplements really can improve egg quality?

I'm posting as someone the wrong side of 40 who has two early miscarriages behind them, one loss due to Downs Syndrome at 12 weeks and one loss due to Edwards as (currently) 15 weeks. Thankfully also two healthy children of 4 and 1.

I was going some research over the weekend and co enzyme q10 was mentioned in a few studies as apparently it has been found to help with mitochondria. 600mg is the recommended daily dose so I've ordered two months supply.

Has anyone taken anything else they think has made a difference? I seem to be able to get pregnant but my eggs are just truly awful.

watching with interest.

can i ask you op where you got your info on doses etc? im 45. got pg at 44 but also had a loss due to downs syndrome. not got pg since and suspect my eggs are past it.

I read an article from a fertility doctor on this. Co-enzyme q10 has been researched on mice I think and had some positive results. Apparently not had sufficient testing on humans to be conclusive either way but certainly won't do any harm so fine to go for it. I'll see if I can find it for you!

Also royal jelly is a herbal supplement which is thought to help with egg quality.

Sorry for your losses Flowers

stillvicar I think I just googled 'dose coenzyme q10 egg fertility' or something and came up with some articles talking about dose. I then found a really good supplement that wasn't hugely expensive so I ordered!!

I can definitely do Royal Jelly too so thank you 👍

Btw sorry for everyone going through similar. I'm actually at the hospital now trying to organise the termination. The problem with TTC after 40 is not just conceiving, it's then dealing with the aftermath if the baby is found to have a problem. It's a total minefield.

I think with two healthy DC you should stop.

MC's and two loses due to Edwards and Downs is very unfortunate maybe you just are too old now.

Other things that help are antioxidants so a diet with a good amount of fruit and veg (8+ portions a day), keeping blood sugar levels balanced, high consumption of omega 3 and decent amounts of protein, i.e. 1g+/kg of body weight. Obv no drinking and smoking, folic acid and a general multivitamin. The male partner could take Proxeed or Profertil, wear loose pants, no smoking or drinking, a healthy diet etc.

I think that stuff works because when it's used before IVF there are more quality embryos produced.

Bloody hell, talk about lack of empathy and tact! Couldn't you just not have commented at all?

OP with regards to the CoQ10, it's more effective if you get it in its reduced form ubiquinol rather than ubiquinone.

SleepFreeZone · 29/08/2017 16:12

Pmsl thanks storm. That hadn't occurred to me to stop 🤦🏻‍♀️

SleepFreeZone - I can empathise, as I tried most things after the age 40. I continued having miscarriages 12 of them, three of them tested and were down to genetic issues due to age. I never found that golden egg during my 40's. Now at nearly 50 I am way passed the point of hope. But I don't regret trying for those years. I tried most things, including aspirin, heparin injections, prednisolone, CoQ10, pineapple core......... the list goes on. I even tried dark chocolate and red wine for one pregnancy, as I was told this would help .....that was a relaxing pregnancy, but still didn't get beyond 12 weeks.

All I can say is try whatever feels right for you. Don't let yourself get stressed over it. Soon you will hopefully find that golden egg, and all will be good.

willitbe I'm so sorry it didn't work out for you 😞 I can definitely live with it not working out for me as I know I'm so lucky to have my two boys. I just feel like I'd like to have one more go at least as I know so many people that have had successful pregnancies at 43. I think once I get to 44/45 I'll accept it's done and dusted.
