Not ovulating after miscarriage

Hi,
Just wondered if anyone has been in the same boat as me? I suffered my 2nd miscarriage 12 weeks ago in June, blighted ovum, needed an erpc.
I haven't ovulated since. I've had 2 period type bleeds, one 28 days after erpc, the next 26 days after that one. My cycles were 26- 29 days before miscarriage.
I've had my blood hcg done - came back at 2 so no retained products, day 3 bloods done - fsh 6.1, lh was 6, told everything was normal. But I'm still not ovulating.
I've been to see a private consultant, she has given me norethisterone then 1 cycle of clomid in the hope to kick start ovulation.
Has anyone else been in this situation? I feel so down, not only have I miscarried, my body is now refusing to work! :-(

I am sorry you have to go through all these!
I am also surprised that your doctor prescribed you Norethindrone, which is is a form of progesterone doing exactly the opposite of what you need! Norethindrone prevents ovulation. This medication also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. This is...stupid, plain English!

The best would be to start ovarian stimulation, so your ovaries will start growing follicles. The best way and close to "natural" is to stimulate with injectable FSH (e.g Follistim) and monitor follicles and ovulation.

Do yourself a favor and consult another doctor!
Good luck!

Thank you for getting back to me (had a name change!!)
I've just finished the course of clomid I was prescibed, does this work similar to follistim? She's not monitoring me so I have no idea if it's doing what it's supposed to!
Thanks!

Clomid is a estrogen blocker. It blocks the receptors for estrogen (the hormone that stimulates follicles development). The body is "tricked" into believing that is not producing enough estrogen. This will trigger ovaries to produce additional follicles, which are the source of estrogen. So you may produce multiple follicles, but in the presence of Norethindrone/progesterone you will not ovulate, because progesterone inhibits ovulation.
What you need is your doctor to check with US if you have mature follicles (20-24 mm) after Clomid and then forcelly induce ovulation with hCG injection when they are mature.
As an additional note, Clomid is decreasing the lining of the uterus, so the thickness of your uterus lining should also be evaluated after Clomid (should not be below 7 mm, as that decrease chances of implantation).
From what you describe, you should rather need a strong estrogen stimulator like injectable FSH (Follistim), but now it's too late. However, things can be recovered with the protocol I described above.
You need asap an US to see if you produced follicles and then make them release the eggs (ovulate) with hCG injections.
If this cycle will not work, you should discuss with your doctor the Follistim option, which is not only stronger, but more friendly for your body, than Clomid.
Good luck and please, please go see another doctor for all these and before getting progesterone!!! (Progesterone should be started 3 days AFTER ovulation/intercourse to stimulate implantation and prevent miscarriage. However, note that progesterone can also increase the time to get your period, if pregnancy did not occurred)
All the best!

PS: If you ovulate and start progesterone after 3 days, then take a pregnancy test 12 AND again14 days after ovulation. If they are both negative, stop progesterone, so the period may occur and start a new cycle.

Thanks. Sorry if I wasn't clear, I'm not taking the Norethisterone now, I stopped, waited for a withdrawal bleed then began the clomid on day 3 of new cycle.
I will definitely ask another doc about injectables though if this doesn't work. I didn't know anything about them! Smile
Thank you very much for your advice! Xx

Oh, Ok. That's more clear and makes sense! All the best!

sofia999 · 14/09/2017 20:16

Also, Clomid protocol is for 5 days, day 5-10, not day 3... But...

Thanks Smile
