Hi,

I have just come off the pill as my husband and I want to try for a baby early next year. I have come off it now to give my body a chance to get back to normal first as my periods were always very irregular before the pill.

I was thinking about taking vitex to help regulate my cycles, however on the box it says do not take if trying for a baby? Does this mean I need to stop before we start ttc?I'm a bit confused as loads of people seem to take it for that purpose.

Does anyone have any advice/experience?

Lady I would give your cycles a chance to regulate themselves before taking any supplements (except folic acid a few months before you plan to start trying.)

You may find, after however long you've been on the pill, that your cycles are quite different from before you took the pill, and you may not need anything to regulate them.

If you still have very irregular periods, you could see your GP, as this might be something they can help you with regardless of whether you are TTC.

Vitex/Agnus Castus is something that can be quite potent/is controversial so it certainly wouldn't be my first port of call, although I have taken it, and subsequently stopped. In terms of taking it while TTC, the advice I have read is that it is not known how safe it is to take during pregnancy, consequently some people only take it up until they ovulate, and start again if they get their period. Others take it all the time, stopping as soon as they get a BFP.

Unless you have known issues with conceiving, I personally wouldn't mess around with anything and would just let your body do it's thing for a while. Many people with irregular periods manage to conceive relatively easily, although I appreciate it makes it harder to keep track of ovulation etc if that's something you want to do.

Hope that doesn't sound patronising, and good luck!

I agree with Flash that you should give your body a chance - especially as you have some time before you start TTC. Give it until the end of the year and see what happens. Plenty of ladies do fall pregnant with irregular af, you could use OPKs to help pinpoint ov. If you're still concerned at the end of the year then see your dr and they may do some blood tests to check there's no underlying condition. It's much better to get a professional opinion than relying on online research.

I had Vitex recommended to me and bought some but did some further research before I took it and decided against it as it does affect your cycles. I don't want it to make the situation worse and, if my dr runs any tests, I wouldn't want it to affect the results. Just start taking folic acid so it has time to build up in your system and hopefully you'll see your bfp soon.

Thanks both, sounds like sensible advice!
