Menstrual migraines

Does anyone else get menstrual migraines who can share exactly what day of the cycle they get them and how they experience them.

I get them 4 days before my period every month. So on Day 24 or 25 depending when I ovulate.

Every month I get my migraine and assume it means conception has failed but would like to know more about when others get them to try to work out exactly which hormone fluctuations are influencing them.

Thanks x

I do. Usually 1 day before AF and on the first day of AF.

Sometimes I'll get a mid month one around Ov. I think it is linked to oestrogen dips.

Thanks @MissMars sorry you suffer twice a month!!! mine are always a few days before. I'd just love to be able to work out which fluctuations cause mjne. Just trying to pin point what is going on! Complete pain (literally) isn't it!

I do too. Before ovulation, and then between 2-4 days before AF.

Just had one today (6 days before AF) and am gutted as I'm assuming that's me out for this cycle.

I get them. Usually the day before my period or day of.

Mine are caused by the fall in progesterone. I'm super sensitive to it and get ovulation sickness when progesterone goes up, and migraines when it goes down.

Hi @NimbleKnitter and @PointeShoesAndTutus thanks for replying. I'm trying to figure out what a normal pattern is. I've not really made a note of mid-month headaches but will start doing so in case linked to ovulation.

I always assumed mine were linked to a drop in progesterone but then wasn't sure why they appeared 4 days pre AF rather than just before.

My doctor said he thinks mine may be due to tension and nerve pinching in my neck - I used to get them 2-3 times per week before I went on an intensive preventative treatment programme for 2 years. I had to stop that due to TTC and thankfully it's now only 2 a month. It must be hormonal now, as it's always CD 14 and CD 22-24. Is progesterone the culprit then?

NimbleKnitter · 28/08/2017 09:36

Are you temping?

I started temping as a way of understanding my migraines initially (before trying to conceive), because high temps largely correlate to high progesterone.

I know that when my temp dips at the end of a cycle, I have a migraine due (followed by a period).

It may be that your progesterone starts dipping 4 days before your period.

Do you usually have spotting?

Fitzsimmons · 28/08/2017 09:39

I do about 2 days before AF.

NimbleKnitter · 28/08/2017 09:49

Oestrogen can also cause menstrual migraines, and oestrogen drops twice in a cycle - after ovulation and just before your period.

If you're getting two migraines a month at these times, you might have an oestrogen sensitivity

Janefx40 · 28/08/2017 09:54

Hiya,

Maybe I should temp. Have been avoiding it as I think I am already obsessed enough with TTC and was worried it might get a bit overwhelming.

I don't usually spot much but there's no doubt that the blood is in there ready to go and it takes my body a few days to expel it (if we have sex then the blood will come out pink or red nearer the day itself). So it is in there

Whenever I get my migraine I assume that means we have failed to conceive (which so far is correct!) but I'm wondering if I might get one even if we did manage it!

@nimble that's really interesting. It sounds like oestrogen might be the culprit for me.

@jane I also rule myself out if I get a migraine - I'd be very interested to hear if anyone gets one in the 2WW and goes on to get a BFP.

I get mine at about day 4/5. Rizatriptan has been life changing for me because the migraines would last 2-3 days. Now I just take a tablet at the first sign and one or two are enough to keep it away.

sourpatchkid · 28/08/2017 22:14

I get mine 2 days before hand. I didn't get them at all when pregnant

Janefx40 · 28/08/2017 22:18

Thanks @sourpatchkid useful info. Probably am right to rule myself out then once the migraine arrives :(

@AnIbisIsWatchingMe I don't know rizatriptan. I will check it out. I'm not really meant to take NSAIDS but ibuprofen works for me so I have started taking it again. The 2 years when I didn't were a total nightmare. I felt like I was living in fear of a migraine. I had prescription codeine for a while - takes quite a lot for it to work on me. But they won't prescribe long term as it's addictive.
