Average cycle length?

Hi everyone,

I'm not yet TTC with DP but we're both 28 and have said we'd like to before we turn 30. I came off the pill over a year ago and now we use condoms (the joy!). On the pill I obviously had regular 28 day cycles, and since I came off it I wanted to monitor my cycle length, start to understand my body a bit better in terms of when I might be ovulating etc. In the last 15 months I have had a range of cycle lengths, averaging between 36-40 days. I have also completely skipped two periods in those 15 months (meaning 70 ish day cycles) but I thought this could be due to stress. I thought there might already be a post about this, but after searching I can't find one so I thought I'd ask the question! What is your average cycle length? 36-40 days is obviously quite a long time and I'm worried that it's not normal (even though when I look online it only says to go to your doctor if it's 40+ days). I also worry that it will take us longer to conceive as the cycles are longer.

I would love to hear how long your cycles are and if anyone is similar to me?

Thanks! Smile

At your age, my cycles were 29-33 days ish. Have never been on the pill, though.
There is a tendency for cycles to shorten with age. At 32/33, mine went quite markedly, to around 26-29 days. (still had my daughter @ 42, though). Long cycles within reason bode well for fertility. However, if you are talking about them regularly being over 6-8 weeks it might be worth looking into whether your ovaries could be somewhat polycystic.

Hi OP, mine are anywhere between 35 days and 9 months. The doctors looked into it a couple of times when I was in my teens but decided it was just a quirk. I guess it's not average but it hasn't caused a problem when it comes to ttc. Good luck when you decide to go for it!

Hi,

I thinkk GPs would generally investigate anyone with cycles over 35 days. Saying that though my friend had cycles between 40-56 days and is currently pregnant without any help so it doesn't mean that there is anything wrong and it's reassuring their regular but might be worth chatting to your own GP and organising some tests x

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm currently on day 38 and I have the usual symptoms I get a few days before I'm due on (sore boobs, skin breakouts, tiredness) but still no AF. It's reassuring to hear that some of you/your friends have longer cycles and have had no problems ttc. I suppose we'll have to see what happens when we start trying and then if we find it difficult I'll take a trip to the GP! Good luck to anyone who is ttc! Smile
