hi,
Hope I am posting this in right place been reading forum for a while and was in hope of some advice.

We have been ttc for over 2 years with an early miscarriage last year. I've booked appointment with gp to seek advice find out next steps.
Could anyone that's been through this advise as to what might hapoen at first gp appointment?

Also my partner already has a child which I understand would rule out Ivf on nhs but does this mean the gp also won't do any tests on me (checking whether ovulating etc ) on nhs?
Would this also mean we wouldn't have access to medication to support with ovulation if this was the problem?
Thanks
Smile

They would fund investigations! (Blood tests etc) but may not fund IVF it depends on where you are as to what pre requisites there are but it's a long road to get to that yet.
Likely a chat, send you for blood tests and maybe a scan to check things like PCOS but don't worry or think about it too much and see what happens when you get there 🙂 they might refer you to hospital clinic when they get the results back as most hospitals won't accept referral until you've had the tests first
Good luck x

Also, some hospitals don't accept referrals if you're over a certain BMI (35 in the hospital I used to work at) x

Thank you for taking time to reply.
I wasn't sure if my partner having a child would mean I'd need to go private for investigations too. It really puts my mind at rest having some idea of what to expect

Hi lasa,

My area funds ivf as long as one of you doesn't have a child- worth checking

Not what you were asking but going LCHF helped me get pregnant. I have PCOS. www.dietdoctor.com/how-to-eat-to-get-pregnant

Thanks for messages. Will start making diet changes too.
Claire I don't think my area do. Just hoping they test so that if there is something wrong we know what the situation is. X

I was in your situation a few years ago. They will probably get you to do a 'day 3 and day 21' test, also a sperm test for your OH. In hindsight, the main things I'd advise:

  1. Day 3 test is FSH. Can actually be days 2-4, but is increasingly inaccurate beyond, so be insistent if your GP seems cavalier about dates.
  2. Likewise, d21 is actually "7-ish days after ovulation". Obviously the further you are from a textbook 28-day cycle, the more you may have to press this point.
  3. Ensure your GP surgery has a mobile no. for you; because having to answer an abrupt "Was it the ovulation test you wanted?" while tethered to an office full of your colleagues , ain't the best.
  4. Ask for a print out of all your results. Stories abound of people being told "It's fine" by their GP when a specialist wouldn't agree.
  5. If you have any gynae condition (s), try to ensure that the GP has it hammered home that they are a medical issue in their own right rather than just part of your fertility concerns. Trying not to sound bitter here, but my GP (who sat on the local CCG board) basically swept my fibroids into a fertility referral without telling me.
